New trend in Asian fighter Market

2022-08-30

In recent years, Asian countries have continuously increased their national defense budgets, and a large part of the funds have been invested in the procurement and upgrading of fighter jets. According to foreign media forecasts, Asian countries will continue to promote fighter procurement and upgrading plans in the future. With the increasing demand for fighter aircraft, the Asian fighter market has begun to show some new trends. In recent years, the defense budgets of Japan, South Korea and other Asian countries have increased rapidly, and a large amount of funds have been used for the procurement and upgrading of fighter planes. In July 2020, the US State Department approved the sale of 105 F-35 fighter jets and related equipment to Japan, with a value of more than 23 billion US dollars. After the completion of this transaction, Japan will become the second largest user of F-35 fighters, second only to the United States. Recently, South Korea decided to spend US $3 billion to purchase 20 additional F-35 fighter planes. While purchasing advanced fighter planes, the ROK has continuously accelerated the upgrading of fighter planes. It is reported that the United States will provide upgrading services for South Korea's F-16 fighter planes and upgrade 134 F-16C / D fighter planes to f-16v, with a total contract value of about 200 million US dollars. In addition, Singapore is upgrading its active F-16C / D fighter to f-16v. At the same time, Indonesia is brewing similar plans. On February 10 this year, Indonesia announced that it would purchase 42 Rafale fighters from France. On the same day, the US Department of Defense announced that the US Department of state had approved the sale of equipment to Indonesia, including 36 F-15 fighters, with a total value of $13.9 billion. In addition, Australia and other countries are also increasing orders to further expand the number of fighter planes. Boeing defense, a subsidiary of the Boeing group, recently predicted that in the next five years, the international arms market has a development potential of $70 billion, of which fighter aircraft will occupy an important share. Jane's defense group predicts that by 2028, 32.4% of the total defense procurement and R & D funds of Southeast Asian countries will be used for air force development. From 2022 to 2031, the total value of multi-purpose fighter procurement projects in Southeast Asia will reach 18.4 billion US dollars. Therefore, for Fighter manufacturers, they will pay more attention to Asia in the next few years. Before expanding procurement channels, fighter jets of Asian countries were mainly purchased from the United States and Russia. For example, many countries are equipped with the F-15 series fighters manufactured by the Boeing company of the United States. Japan is equipped with about 200 f-15j / DJ fighters, and South Korea and Singapore are also equipped with a certain number of F-15 series fighters. Russian fighter jets are also popular in Southeast Asia. For example, the Malaysian Air force is equipped with several su-30mkm fighters, the Indian air force is equipped with a certain number of SU-30MKI fighters, and the Myanmar air force is also equipped with su-30sme fighters. Alexander mikyev, chief executive officer of the Russian Defense export company, said that five Asian countries have shown strong interest in purchasing su-57 fighters. In addition, Vietnam and India have been identified as potential customers of the Russian single engine light fighter su-75. With the increasing demand of the fighter market in the Asia Pacific region, the trend of diversification of fighter sources is more and more obvious. For example, in Malaysia
