China provides humanitarian assistance to the fire accident in Cuba's oil storage base

The handover ceremony of the US $150000 emergency humanitarian cash assistance provided by the Red Cross Society of China to the Cuban Red Cross was held at the Ministry of foreign trade and foreign investment of Cuba on the 15th. The purpose of this assistance is to support Cuba in carrying out rescue work for a fire accident at an oil storage base in Matanzas province. Chinese ambassador to Cuba Ma Hui and Cuban Vice Minister of foreign trade and foreign investment Deborah Rivas attended the ceremony and signed the handover certificate. In his speech, Ma Hui said that China and Cuba share weal and woe. The Chinese government and people share the pain of the Cuban people. He believed that under the strong leadership of the Cuban party and government, the Cuban people will surely unite as one, overcome difficulties and carry out reconstruction. On behalf of the Cuban government and people, Rivas thanked the Red Cross Society of China for its assistance. She said that under the current complex situation, China's move is another manifestation of the unity and friendship between the two countries. Susanna llovete, vice president of the Cuban Red Cross Society, said at the ceremony that the Cuban Red Cross Society thanked the Red Cross Society of China for providing relief equipment, respirators, protective articles and other humanitarian materials and cash assistance on many occasions and fighting side by side with the Cuban people. The largest oil storage base in Cuba, located in the industrial zone of the port of Matanzas in Matanzas Province, has eight oil storage tanks. One of them caught fire after being struck by lightning on the evening of the 5th. The fire then spread to three oil storage tanks in the immediate vicinity and caused multiple explosions. Two firefighters were killed and 132 people were injured. At present, the search and rescue work at the accident site is still in progress. (news agency)
