UN Secretary General calls for taxation of large oil and gas companies

2022-08-04

UN Secretary General Guterres on the 3rd called on governments to tax large oil and gas companies that have made huge profits from the current energy crisis. Guterres said at the third report release conference of the United Nations global food, energy and financial crisis response group that it is "immoral" for oil and gas companies to make record profits from the current energy crisis while the poorest people and communities and the natural environment pay a heavy price. He said that the overall profit of the world's largest energy company in the first quarter of 2022 was nearly $100 billion. Governments should levy taxes on energy companies that make excessive profits, and the taxes should be used to help the most vulnerable people tide over the difficulties. Guterres also called on all countries, especially developed countries, to manage energy demand through energy conservation, promoting public transport and promoting nature based energy solutions, and accelerate the conversion to renewable energy. After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Guterres set up the UN global food, energy and financial crisis response team to study the situation and seek countermeasures. The third report of the crisis response group focuses on the energy crisis. (news agency)
