The United Nations released the first global policy framework on the protection of the rights of migrant children in the context of climate change

The international organization for migration, UNICEF, Georgetown University and the United Nations University released new guidelines on the 25th to better protect migrant children in the context of climate change. This is the first global policy framework on the protection of the rights of migrant children in the context of climate change issued by the United Nations. The guiding principles on migrant children in the context of climate change put forward a total of 9 principles, focusing on the special and multifaceted vulnerabilities faced by some children in the process of domestic and cross-border mobility due to the adverse effects of climate change. Antonio Vitorino, director general of the international organization for migration, said: "the purpose of developing these guiding principles is to ensure that the needs and rights of children are taken into account in policy debate and programme planning. In the context of climate change, environmental degradation and disasters, managing migration and resolving child displacement is a huge challenge that we must now address." According to the guiding principles, in 2020 alone, nearly 10million children were displaced by weather related shocks. About 1billion children live in 33 countries at high risk of the impact of climate change, and millions of children will migrate in the next few years. Catherine Russell, executive director of the United Nations Children's fund, said, "displaced children are at greater risk of abuse, trafficking and exploitation. They are more likely to lose access to education and health care. They are often forced to marry early and do child labor. Through coordinated action guided by these principles, governments, civil society and international organizations can work together to better protect the rights and well-being of migrant children."
