Iran has made progress in uranium enrichment technology

2022-07-11

Iran announced a progress in uranium enrichment technology on the 10th, confirming that the Faldo nuclear facility has achieved the production of enriched uranium with 20% abundance using ir-6 centrifuges. The spokesman of Iran's atomic energy organization, behruz Kamal vandi, announced by state television on the 10th that Iran produced enriched uranium with 20% abundance for the first time by using ir-6 centrifuges on the 9th. Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of this plan two weeks ago. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed Iran's progress in uranium enrichment on the 9th. Director general Rafael Grossi wrote in his report that with the help of the improved system, Iran can use ir-6 centrifuges to increase the enrichment of uranium from 5% to 20%. According to the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue reached in 2015, Iran can only use the first generation centrifuges, namely ir-1 centrifuges, to carry out uranium enrichment activities, and the enrichment of uranium shall not exceed 3.67% in exchange for the lifting of sanctions against Iran by the international community. In May, 2018, the U.S. government led by then president Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear agreement, and then resumed and added sanctions against Iran. Iran then gradually suspended the implementation of some provisions of the Iran nuclear agreement, including breaking through the limitation on the stock of low enriched uranium, increasing the abundance of enriched uranium, and using advanced IR-4 centrifuges and ir-6 centrifuges. The Fudo nuclear facility was able to increase uranium enrichment to 20% in January last year, but it did not use ir-6 centrifuges. In other Iranian nuclear facilities, uranium enrichment can also reach 60%. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, using ir-6 centrifuges to obtain enriched uranium with a 20% abundance means that Iran can switch between different uranium enrichment abundances more quickly and easily. The negotiations devoted to "saving the Iran nuclear agreement" are currently at an impasse. Under the coordination of the European Union, Iran and the United States held a two-day indirect negotiation on the resumption of the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement in Doha, the capital of Qatar, at the end of June, and there was still no breakthrough. US President Joseph Biden is scheduled to visit the Middle East in the near future. The Washington Post published Biden's article on the 9th. He wrote that he would continue to exert diplomatic and economic pressure on Iran to allow the latter to renegotiate the agreement. Iran said that it was still possible for Iran to resume the implementation of the Iran nuclear agreement, but the United States insisted on its unilateral requirements, which hindered the achievement of the negotiations.
