Universities should aim to build bridges and roads, not high walls

"What we do in universities should be aimed at building bridges, not high walls". In the current international environment, researchers from different countries should work together to meet global challenges. "This is very important," said Andy Schofield, President of Lancaster University and theoretical physicist, in an interview during the interdisciplinary meeting of the "the Belt and Road" initiative, which ended on the 10th. As a scientist, Scofield believes that globalization and international cooperation are still the core of scientific and technological development. He pointed out that "talents and scientific research achievements should not be confined to national boundaries". In the process of human scientific and technological development, only "cohesion and cooperation" can mankind benefit and improve. "Global challenges must be tackled in a global manner", because "no country can solve global problems such as sustainable energy supply alone", Scofield said. He believed that the importance of global cooperation was indispensable, and explained it with the new crown pandemic and the response to climate change as an example. During the epidemic, "we have seen that multinational cooperation has brought many benefits to countries around the world: vaccine development has reached an unprecedented level, and genome sequencing has developed rapidly..." this is a clear proof that global efforts can benefit the world. As for climate change, which "may be the biggest challenge the world has faced so far", unlike the new crown pandemic, this challenge lasts relatively longer and will not lead to the sudden death of life, but will determine "how a planet will develop and whether it can develop in a sustainable way". "No country can tackle [this challenge] alone," he said As a British theoretical physicist who has worked with Chinese researchers, Scofield is optimistic about the scientific cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing that China UK relations are one of the most important relations. China UK scientific cooperation has many advantages, "our advantages can be pooled together to solve those challenges that mankind faces". He recalled: "I had very positive contact with Chinese colleagues. My first academic paper was co authored with Chinese researchers. He taught me a lot about theoretical physics and how to do this paper." Scofield expressed "great admiration" for the continuous development of Chinese universities in science and technology. His Lancaster University has "very good and strong" cooperation with many Chinese scientific research institutions. "Science is a global cause," Schofield stressed. "Cooperation will always be effective. Trust and confidence are needed. We should be open and transparent to our current situation and cooperation results. More importantly, we cannot work in isolation." (outlook new era)
