Britain's plan to amend the "Northern Ireland Protocol" was opposed by the EU

2022-06-15

The British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth trass submitted a bill to parliament on the 13th, formally announcing the specific plan for unilaterally modifying part of the "Northern Ireland Protocol". The move continues to attract opposition from the EU. The British government issued a statement on the same day that the bill could solve the practical problems caused by the protocol in Northern Ireland, such as cumbersome customs procedures, inflexible supervision, differences in taxes and expenditures, etc. The statement said that the amendment to the protocol in the bill includes: eliminating unnecessary costs and paperwork for enterprises trading in the UK; Enterprises can choose to sell goods in the Northern Ireland market according to the rules of the UK or the EU; Ensure that Northern Ireland can benefit from the same tax relief and expenditure policies as the rest of the UK; Settlement of disputes through independent arbitration rather than the European Court of justice. On the same day, marosh sevcovic, vice president of the European Commission, who is responsible for negotiating with the British side on the issue of Northern Ireland, issued a statement in response, saying that it is unrealistic to renegotiate the protocol, and the unilateral actions of the British side are undermining bilateral mutual trust. "There is no viable alternative to this delicate, long negotiated balance. Any renegotiation will only bring more legal uncertainty to the people and businesses of Northern Ireland." The Northern Ireland protocol is part of the brexit agreement. According to the agreement, Northern Ireland will remain in the European single market and the EU customs union to prevent the emergence of a land "hard border" on the island of Ireland. However, some commodities entering Northern Ireland from the British island of Great Britain are subject to customs and border security checks. For several months, the British side has been complaining about the rigidity of the protocol, interfering with trade in Northern Ireland, increasing political instability, and demanding amendment. In October last year, the EU issued revision proposals, including reducing customs procedures, simplifying certification and reducing border inspection to promote the flow of goods between the island of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The EU also agreed to amend its own rules to ensure the uninterrupted supply of drugs in Northern Ireland. However, the EU's proposal for revision was rejected by the British side. The amendments proposed by the British side include that the relevant inspection will be cancelled if the destination of goods entering Northern Ireland from the island of Great Britain is not the Republic of Ireland.
