The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the 29th urging member states to upgrade pandemic prevention, preparedness and response to the highest level of political leadership. The resolution urges Member States to strengthen international collaboration and coordination at the highest political leadership level in pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, including by participating in and supporting ongoing discussions to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement or international instrument within the framework of the World Health Organization, with a view to the eventual adoption of a document. The resolution urges Member States to prioritize pandemic prevention, preparedness and response in their national agendas, ensure the participation of the whole government and society, achieve universal health coverage based on primary health care, establish resilient health systems, support and protect the ranks of medical and health personnel, and provide social and economic support for the popularization of public health measures. The resolution invited Member States to cooperate with the medical and scientific community, laboratories and monitoring networks in order to share relevant pathogen samples and gene sequence data as soon as possible, safely, transparently and quickly. The resolution urges Member States to strengthen the transfer of relevant technology and expertise, encourage research and innovation, and strengthen local and regional capacities to manufacture, regulate and procure the tools needed to promote equitable and effective access to vaccines, treatments, diagnostic tools and basic supplies.
