China and UNHCR provide humanitarian supplies to Afghanistan

2022-03-28

The handover ceremony of China's South South cooperation assistance fund and UNHCR for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan was held in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, on the 27th. Wang Yu, Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan, and Yuko Takashima, acting representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees in Afghanistan, attended the ceremony. Wang Yu said that since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the Chinese government has been highly concerned about the plight of the people living in China under the influence of the outbreak, turmoil and drought. The South South Fund approved the application of the UNHCR to provide emergency refuge and support projects for vulnerable groups in Afghanistan last year, providing assistance funds to help the troubled Arab people. With the efforts of UNHCR staff, all materials have been purchased and are being distributed in Kabul, Kandahar, Baghlan, Nangarhar and other provinces. It is believed that these materials will bring tangible help to the Afghan people. Wang Yu said that since the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan last August, Afghanistan has ushered in a key stage of peaceful reconstruction. Afghanistan is currently facing serious humanitarian and economic difficulties and needs assistance from all parties as soon as possible. On the one hand, China supports the United Nations to play a greater role and welcomes the emergency appeal for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan launched by the United Nations. To this end, China will make separate donations to the United Nations refugee agency, the World Food Programme and others. On the other hand, China has actively helped the Afghan people through bilateral channels, provided assistance including food, medicine and winter materials, and arranged 36 charter flights to import Afghan pine nuts, which has brought more than 22 million US dollars to Afghanistan and written a new chapter in the friendship between the Chinese and Afghan people. Yuko Takashima thanked the China South South cooperation assistance fund for its financial support to UNHCR and China's continued humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. She said that the current humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is not optimistic and the people are facing a severe survival crisis. This batch of Chinese assistance is at the right time and will bring tangible help to more than 90000 displaced refugees and school children in Afghanistan. (Xinhua News Agency)
