Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, called on the international community to support Arab countries in independently exploring a development path in line with their national conditions. Zhang Jun said at the high-level public meeting on cooperation between the Security Council and the League of Arab States (LAS) on the same day that for a long time, security and development have been the two major goals pursued by Arab countries. Achieving national and regional peace, stability and prosperity is the common aspiration of the Arab people. The international community should play a constructive role in supporting Arab countries to independently explore a development path in line with their national conditions and independently determine their future and destiny. Zhang Jun said that the United Nations should deepen cooperation with the Arab League and practice the spirit of Chapter VIII of the Charter of the United Nations. The Security Council should attach importance to the views of the Arab League and encourage regional settlement of regional disputes. China encourages relevant special envoys and special representatives of the UN Secretary General to strengthen communication, maintain coordination and form joint forces with the league. When talking about the Palestinian issue, Zhang Jun said that the international situation is constantly changing, but in no case can the Palestinian issue be marginalized. China hopes that Palestine and Israel will take the recent high-level contacts as an opportunity to gradually build mutual trust, accumulate momentum and restart equal dialogue at an early date. China looks forward to strengthening unity within Palestine, achieving reconciliation and forming a unified negotiating position. The United Nations and the Security Council should coordinate peace efforts with the Arab League, and continue to promote the Middle East peace process on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, the Arab peace initiative and other international consensus. With regard to the conflict in Syria, Zhang Jun said that the seventh round of the group meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Council is being held in Geneva, Switzerland. China looks forward to substantive progress in the meeting and promote the political process of "Syrian led and Syrian owned". On the Libyan issue, Zhang Jun said that he hoped that all parties would adhere to the general direction of political settlement, reach consensus on important issues related to the future and destiny of Libya as soon as possible while maintaining peace and stability in Libya, and hold elections as soon as possible. Libya's political process must adhere to the principle of "being dominated and owned by the people". China supports the Arab League to strengthen communication and coordination with the United Nations and the African Union through the Quartet mechanism on Libya, so as to play a more positive and constructive role in promoting the political process in Libya. When talking about the security of the Gulf region, Zhang Jun said that China proposes to establish a multilateral dialogue platform in the Gulf region to gradually build a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security framework starting with the protection of oil facilities, civil facilities and waterway safety. China is willing to maintain communication with the Arab League and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf in this regard. Zhang Jun pointed out that China has always been concerned about the cause of peaceful development in the Arab world.
