UN Secretary General calls for an end to unsustainable production and consumption patterns endangering forests
2022-03-22
UN Secretary General Guterres called on the international community to take practical actions to end the unsustainable production and consumption patterns endangering forests on the "international forest day" on the 21st. The theme of this year's international forest day is "forests and sustainable production and consumption". Guterres said in a speech on the same day that forests and their sustainable management and resource utilization are the key to addressing climate change and promoting human prosperity and well-being. The international community should take practical action to put an end to unsustainable production and consumption patterns endangering forests and provide support to relevant countries and people. Guterres said that forests are natural filters that provide clean air and water for mankind, protect biodiversity and help the earth regulate the climate. Forests have brought immeasurable ecological, economic, social and health benefits to mankind, but 10 million hectares of forests are still degraded or destroyed every year. Guterres said that forests play a key role in reducing poverty and achieving sustainable development goals. The production and consumption of wood in a more environmentally friendly way is crucial to the earth and mankind. Only through the sustainable management of forests can this renewable resource be protected. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to designate March 21 as "international forest day" every year to encourage Member States to organize various activities to raise people's awareness of the importance of forests.
