On behalf of more than 60 countries, China called for equitable global distribution of vaccines at the UN Human Rights Council

2022-03-18

Ambassador Chen Xu, permanent representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made a joint statement on behalf of more than 60 countries at the 49th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on the 16th, calling for equitable global distribution of vaccines. Chen Xu said the novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic has been delayed for two years. With the joint efforts of the international community, remarkable progress has been made in global vaccination, but at present, the problems of uneven global vaccine distribution and uneven vaccination are still very prominent. We are still far from the goal of the World Health Organization to vaccinate 70% of people in all countries by the middle of this year. The "vaccine gap" has become the biggest obstacle to overcoming the epidemic. Only 5% of the population in low-income countries are fully vaccinated, which is far from the vaccination rate in high-income countries, which will further exacerbate global inequality. Chen Xu said that we welcome the convening of the high-level meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the new coronavirus vaccine and call on all countries to give priority to protecting people's right to life and health, adhere to the first attribute of the vaccine as a global public product, ensure the equitable distribution of the vaccine, accelerate the speed of vaccination and bridge the international "immunization gap". We hope that in the spirit of solidarity and cooperation, the international community will play the role of multilateral mechanisms, increase assistance to developing countries and improve the accessibility and affordability of vaccines and other health products in developing countries, especially the least developed countries. We support countries to strengthen cooperation in research and drug research and development of mutated viruses, build a multi-level anti epidemic defense line and work together to overcome the epidemic.
