The United Nations has warned that Yemen faces severe famine

2021-12-14

The United Nations World Food Program released a report that the continuous war has caused more than half of Yemen's population to face severe famine, and half of children under the age of 5 are malnourished. The development of the situation in Yemen is worrying. Saudi Arabia's "Middle East News" published an article entitled "the World Food Programme warned Yemen of famine" on the 14th, saying that the continued fierce war has displaced thousands of Yemenis, and millions of people are starving without assistance. The report points out that Yemen is one of the countries with the most serious humanitarian crisis in the world, At present, more than half of the country's people (16.2 million) are facing severe hunger and half of the children under the age of 5 (2.3 million) are seriously malnourished. The report says that although emergency food assistance has been provided to about 13 million Yemenis, it is far from enough. Due to the lack of funds of the programme, nearly 3 million people have been unable to receive assistance every month in the past 19 months, and many families can only eat one meal a day. The report says the devaluation of Yemen's currency is one of the main reasons for increasing hunger. At the beginning of December, it reached the latest level of 1600 Yemeni Riyals per US dollar. In addition, Yemen's foreign exchange reserves dried up and there was no money to buy food from abroad. The report also states that the war in Yemen has been burning for seven years, during which many families have been displaced for many times and moved from one temporary camp to another. Families who have fled for many times are the largest group of food insecurity. The report calls on the international community to take concrete actions to extinguish the war in Yemen as soon as possible. (outlook new era)
