Iran nuclear talks: Iran and the West continue to exert pressure on each other

2021-12-13

The parties to the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue have held the seventh round of talks in the Austrian capital Vienna in recent days. An Iranian person close to the Iranian delegation said on the 12th that the demands made by the participating European countries were excessive, leading to the slow progress of the talks. "The excessive demands of three European countries or one or two of them have slowed down the negotiation process," the source told Iran's Tasnim news agency The source said that during this round of talks, the attitude of one or two European countries has always been "not constructive", "it is still so today", "the adherence of the European side to this non constructive position has led to differences among the five participating countries." The three European countries participating in the Vienna talks are Britain, France and Germany. When British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth trass presided over the foreign ministers' meeting of the group of seven in Liverpool, England on the 12th, she shouted to Iran in strict terms: "this is Iran's last chance to come to the negotiating table with a serious solution to the problem. The solution must be to agree (implement) the terms of the Iranian nuclear agreement. This is their last chance, and they must do so." At the meeting, Germany's new foreign minister Annalena belburke attacked Iran. She said that the latest demands made by the Iraqi side in this round of talks have delayed the negotiation process and made the Iraqi side "lose a lot of trust". Iran signed the Iran nuclear agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany in 2015. According to the agreement, Iran restricted its nuclear activities and the United Nations, the United States and the European Union lifted economic sanctions against Iran. In May 2018, the US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iranian nuclear agreement, then restarted and increased sanctions against Iraq. From May 2019, Iran gradually suspended the implementation of some provisions of the Iran nuclear agreement, but promised that the relevant measures were "reversible". After the US Joseph Biden government took office at the beginning of this year, Iran and the United States showed their willingness to negotiate. The Iranian side stressed that the United States should first resume the implementation of the agreement and lift sanctions against Iraq if it "illegally" withdraws from the Iranian nuclear agreement. In order to urge the United States and Iraq to resume the implementation of the agreement, the parties concerned have held six rounds of talks in Vienna since April this year. Iran refused to talk to the United States on the grounds that the United States had withdrawn from the agreement. The US delegation held indirect talks with the Iranian side in Vienna by word of mouth. The seventh round of talks began on November 29, adjourned on the 3rd of this month and continued on the 9th.
