Knife painting on paper: take the knife as the pen to "paint" colorful works

2021-12-01

Milk white ducklings, light pink hamsters, crystal blue pebbles... These vivid paintings with different shapes are actually created by a small blade. This unique form of painting art creation is knife painting on paper. Knife blade and coated paper are all painting tools. Wang Jing, 53, vice chairman of Shenyang Federation of literary and art circles, has been engaged in paper knife painting art for 26 years. With a blade, she can present a variety of skills such as publishing painting, lacquer painting, embroidery, meticulous painting, freehand landscape painting and so on. The paper knife painting draws lessons from the techniques of Chinese meticulous painting, and uses a small knife blade to color and leave knife marks on the coated paper to form vivid pictures. Wang Jing said that paper knife painting is best at showing small things in the world, such as every fluff of a duckling, every vein on a flower petal and leaf. But this delicate work is a great test of the creator's patience. "Even if you paint for eight hours a day, you can create a painting for half a month or more." Talking about the birth of paper knife painting, Wang Jing believes that curiosity makes paper knife painting appear unexpectedly. In 1995, Wang Jing worked in Liaozhong, Shenyang. When designing an invitation card for the May 4th Youth Day, the paper cutter accidentally drew a red cardboard and a white line appeared. "According to common sense, this scratched red cardboard should be directly thrown into the trash can. However, I not only didn't throw it away, but also stared at the cardboard for a long time. I thought if I could draw lines, could I form a picture? I created a pair of small peacocks with a paper cutter on an A4 size red cardboard." Wang Jing said. However, the small picture of peacock created at that time can not be called a painting because it looks like paper cutting. "But it makes me very happy and excited. I can draw with a knife on the red cardboard!" Wang Jing said. The prototype of knife painting on paper was inadvertently born. Since then, Wang Jing began her creative career, from painting on red cardboard with a knife blade to creating on coated paper with a blade. "Because coated paper has thickness and good gloss, it is more suitable for knife painting on paper. But coated paper also has disadvantages, that is, once the mark is left, it will last forever. It can neither be covered with other colors nor change the line direction. It can only strive to cut accurately and form at one time without any mistakes and mistakes," Wang Jing said. There are several knife techniques such as scratching, sipping, pointing, rubbing and scraping, but the basic force is relatively soft. From the lonely mountain range of "birds flying in thousands of mountains" to the "sunshine censer producing purple smoke" shrouded in mist; From the crying newborn birds, to the crystal clear early spring river, to the still life painting of "one mouse, one fruit and one leaf"... All are presented by Wang Jing delicately and vividly, showing the concept of "the more rigid, the more flexible". Over the past 26 years, the art of paper knife painting has been growing with the efforts of Wang Jing. Now, Shenyang has been determined as the origin of Chinese paper knife painting culture by the China Federation of literary and art circles and other departments. As the pioneer of paper knife painting, Wang Jing also published professional papers in academic journals to explore the painting techniques of paper knife painting and improve its theory. "I hope this technique can be popularized, so that all those who want to learn paper knife painting can afford and learn, so that more people can understand its charm and value, and strive to make this art go to the world." Wang Jing is full of expectations for the future of this art. (outlook new era)
