Folk houses in Dongba, Tibet: witness the integration of multi-ethnic cultures

2021-11-01

Walking along the Nujiang River Valley and passing through a rugged winding mountain township road, an open land is suddenly seen in the depths of the desolate Canyon, with dozens of houses scattered on the oasis, just like a paradise. This is Dongba Township, Zuogong County, Changdu City, Tibet Autonomous Region. It is famous for its unique folk houses in Tibet. Recently, a reporter from chinanews.com came to the place to interview. Dongba township was once one of the important post stations of the ancient tea horse road, which is very suitable for material distribution and transit. According to historical records, there were five or six big horse gangs in Dongba Township, running on the ancient tea horse road, to Kangding and Dali in the East, Lhasa in the west, and even Yadong to engage in long-distance trafficking. The folk in Dongba village carry out antlers, Cordyceps sinensis, musk and Fritillaria, and then bring in tea, brown sugar and cloth from Sichuan and Yunnan. They walk between the valleys all year round. The commercial trade has promoted the commercial prosperity of Dongba township. During the exchange of merchants, many horse gangs built houses here. They also brought the essence of multi-ethnic architecture to Dongba, making the small village in the depths of Nujiang Canyon become the epitome of the integration of ethnic cultures in Southwest China. The reporter came to the largest folk house in Junyong village, Dongba township. He saw exquisite atmosphere and full of life. This civil structure three storey residential building was built in 1997 and has been built for more than 20 years. It contains architectural elements of Tibetan, Han and Naxi nationalities. This magnificent folk house takes the courtyard as the center, is closed around, and some inclined roofs on both sides are covered with glazed tiles. Cranes, flowers and birds, phoenixes and golden toads can be seen in the painting and decoration of the internal and external walls of the building. The walls of folk houses are of typical Tibetan architectural style, and the wood panels protruding above the windows and doors show the charm of Naxi architecture. In fact, the blending of national culture in Dongba township is not only reflected in folk houses. In recent years, this deep mountain secret land has been continuously known by the outside world. Its unique national flavor has attracted more and more domestic and foreign tourists and entrepreneurs to come here. Dongba township residents also use characteristic houses to set up family hotels. Their days are getting better and better, and their contact with the outside world is getting closer and closer. (outlook new era)
