Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam announced during a media briefing before attending the Executive Council on the 18th that the voting for the 8th Legislative Council election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will be held on December 7th, electing 90 members of the 8th Legislative Council. Li Jiachao stated that before the Legislative Council election, the Special Administrative Region will hold by elections for the Election Committee's sectoral groups. The Election Committee should have 1500 members, of which 967 are elected members and the rest are nominated and ex officio members. Based on current numbers, we need to elect 90 out of 967 elected members by election, allowing them to nominate and vote in the Election Committee sector of the Legislative Council general election. The voting day for the by elections of the Election Committee's sectoral groups is scheduled for September 7th. Li Jiachao said that in order to ensure the smooth running of this year's two important elections, the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau has been instructed to prepare and work closely with the Electoral Affairs Commission to make comprehensive arrangements and contingency plans in various aspects such as publicity and promotion, recruitment and training of election personnel, vote counting arrangements, data systems, and security, to ensure the smooth holding of the eighth Legislative Council election, in order to achieve the goals of fairness, impartiality, integrity, honesty, safety, orderliness, and efficiency, and to elect a new generation of patriotic, capable, and responsible Legislative Council members who will serve the people, Hong Kong, and the country.
