AH-64E Apache helicopter. According to foreign media reports, the British Army is seeking to combine the AH-64E "Apache" helicopter with drones to improve the combat effectiveness of the helicopter, which is an important step for the British Army to explore the coordinated operation of helicopters and drones. The AH-64E Apache helicopter is the latest model equipped by the British Army. In the second half of 2021, after completing the test flight of the aircraft, the British Army has repeatedly deployed it in NATO military exercises and carried out various tasks. At the same time, the British Army is seeking drones that can collaborate with the AH-64E Apache helicopter for combat. Previously, a series of experiments conducted by Leonardo UK showed that the AH-64E "Apache" helicopter could work together with the Royal Air Force's "Guardian" drone to mimic the joint combat style of the US Army's "Apache" attack helicopter and MQ-1C "Grey Hawk" drone. The British Army plans to combine the AH-64E Apache helicopter with the Mule drone, and through a series of modifications to the helicopter, enable it to operate in conjunction with the drone. As of now, the British Army has received 41 AH-64E Apache helicopters and is expected to receive a total of 50 by the first half of 2025. These AH-64E Apache helicopters are equipped with Link16 data link, M5 identification friend or foe system, and the latest communication system, mainly used to support manned unmanned formation operations. According to the British Army plan, one AH-64E Apache helicopter can command up to six Mule drones, each of which can carry multiple payloads and perform tasks such as electronic jamming, radar detection, intelligence reconnaissance, and strike. To ensure communication between the helicopter and the drone, command and control sensors are installed above the rotor of the AH-64E Apache helicopter to avoid air turbulence interference caused by rotor blade rotation and ensure a more reliable communication connection. Analysis suggests that the British Army is seeking to combine the AH-64E Apache helicopter with the Mule drone to form a manned unmanned formation. By sharing drone data, this will significantly enhance the battlefield perception ability of helicopter crew members and improve the combat effectiveness of helicopters. Once successfully completed, this plan will help the British Army improve its aviation equipment structure, support the rapid deployment of the British Army's rapid response force, and enhance its combat capabilities.
