The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently launched a pilot project for a 10 gigabit optical network, proposing to focus on key scenarios such as residential areas, factories, and industrial parks in cities and regions with conditions and foundations by the end of 2025. 10G optical network is the upgrade and evolution direction of the next generation optical network, and an important component of the new information infrastructure. Promoting the development of a 10 gigabit optical network plays an important supporting role in driving effective investment, enhancing user experience, promoting new information consumption, advancing new industrialization, and assisting in the digital transformation of the economy and society. Peng Jian, director of the Policy and Regulation Research Institute of CCID Research Institute, analyzed that carrying out the pilot work of 10G optical network is a powerful measure to enhance international competitiveness. In the wave of global digital transformation, promoting 10G optical network can help China maintain its leading position in the field of network communication, attract more international enterprises and talents, promote international cooperation and exchanges, and enhance China's voice and influence in the global digital economy. This conforms to the new trend of technological innovation and industrial upgrading. At present, significant progress has been made in key technologies such as 50G-PON ultra wide optical access, providing technical support for the large-scale promotion of 10G optical networks. In addition, promoting a 10 gigabit optical network can drive the development of industrial chain links such as fiber optic cables, optical modules, switches, and routers, promote industrial collaborative innovation and upgrading, and create more economic value and employment opportunities. In recent years, China has built the world's largest and technologically advanced optical network infrastructure, achieving "gigabit connectivity in every county and broadband connectivity in every village". The number of 10G-PON ports has reached 27.92 million, and the number of gigabit optical network users has reached 209 million, with over 20000 typical application cases. Currently, new businesses and applications such as cloud gaming, immersive reality/metaverse, and high-precision industrial quality inspection are constantly emerging, which demand greater bandwidth, lower latency, and higher reliability for optical networks. It is urgent to accelerate the evolution of gigabit optical networks to ten gigabit optical networks. The most intuitive feeling compared to gigabit optical networks is the significant increase in uplink speed, which can solve the application problem of insufficient uplink speed on gigabit optical networks. For example, in the manufacturing industry, automatic optical inspection equipment continuously obtains real-time ultra high definition images of products from multiple angles and uploads them to the backend server. The transmission speed requirement is 7Gbps to 8Gbps, which is difficult to support with the uplink speed of gigabit optical networks Peng Jian said. Currently, pilot applications of 10 gigabit optical networks are advancing simultaneously in various regions. Shanghai and Beijing are the first to achieve commercial use of 10 gigabit broadband packages domestically and even globally. On August 9, 2024, Shanghai Telecom released the "Beautiful Home 10 Gigabit Fusion Package", launching numerous innovative 10 Gigabit application services such as ultra fast smart home hard drives, 3D live streaming, ultra fast cloud gaming, and 3D light perception. On September 18, 2024, Beijing Unicom released the "10 Gigabit All Optical Broadband Package", providing 10 Gigabit services such as AI home cameras, digital people, and cloud computers. Peng Jian analyzed that from a technical perspective, in order to achieve seamless integration and smooth upgrade between 10G optical network and existing network access technologies, it is necessary to optimize and transform the existing network architecture. From the perspective of the industrial chain, there are still key equipment and component shortcomings in the current 10 gigabit optical network industry chain, which urgently need to be addressed through collaborative breakthroughs. From an application perspective, it is necessary to explore the "hard requirements" and "real applications" of the 10 gigabit optical network through pilot projects, and form replicable and promotable application solutions. From a cost perspective, the application of 10G optical network is still in its infancy. According to the theory of economies of scale, the cost will be relatively high in the early stage due to factors such as limited supply chain suppliers and small shipment volume. The relevant person in charge of the Information and Communication Development Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology introduced that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has organized a pilot project for the 10 gigabit optical network, aiming to use the pilot work as a driving force to accelerate the collaborative solution of key and difficult problems in the current implementation and application of the 10 gigabit optical network among all parties in the industry chain, promote breakthroughs in the core technology and key equipment of China's 10 gigabit optical network, promote the construction of a mature industrial chain and a complete industrial system for the 10 gigabit optical network, orderly guide China's 10 gigabit optical network from technical pilot to deployment and application, and help promote new industrialization. It is reported that the pilot work focuses on three major scenarios: residential areas, factories, and industrial parks, and deploys key technologies for the application of 10G optical networks. Among them, the 10G community will pilot the development of 10G optical network services such as cloud storage, cloud computing, and cloud gaming; The 10G factory will pilot and verify the application of 10G optical network and artificial intelligence fusion technology in industrial AOI (optical automatic quality inspection), production, and safety monitoring fields; The 10G campus will explore campus networking solutions, promote deployment in various scenarios such as classrooms, libraries, student dormitories, and scientific research experiments, and support applications such as virtual training, cloud teaching, and distance education. Peng Jian believes that the low latency and high bandwidth characteristics of 10G optical network enable users to enjoy a smoother and more seamless experience when conducting real-time interactive applications such as video calls, online games, cloud games, VR/AR, which can greatly enhance the user experience and promote the development of new information consumption, as well as the digital transformation of the economy and society.
