Yang Xiuping, a retired military officer and "good person of Kunming" in Kunming, Yunnan Province, always wears a party member badge on his chest. The Communist Party member must reveal their identity, which is both an honor and a constraint, urging me to serve the people wholeheartedly, "said the veteran party member with 55 years of party experience. Yang Xiuping's hometown is in Qijiang District, Chongqing. After retiring from the Yunnan Military Region in 2005, he lived alternately in Kunming and Qijiang. In the eyes of his wife Yang Xingfang, Yang Xiuping is a "restless" person who does good deeds wherever he lives and actively participates in various public welfare activities. In October 2020, a conference was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People's Volunteers' War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. At that time, Yang Xiuping, who lived in Qijiang District, was deeply moved after watching the live TV broadcast. He suddenly thought: How many surviving Korean War veterans are there in Qijiang District? Are they doing well? In the afternoon of that day, Yang Xiuping went to relevant departments to search for information and learned that many ambitious young people in Qijiang District had participated in the volunteer army, and more than 270 people had sacrificed their lives. After the end of the Korean War, most of the veterans who returned to their homeland returned to their hometowns to farm. As time goes by, fewer and fewer people know their stories. That night, Yang Xiuping tossed and turned. He made a decision to search for surviving veterans of the Qijiang Volunteer Army and record their battle stories. Most of the local volunteer army veterans live in rural areas, and Yang Xiuping drives his own car to search for them, leaving early and returning late. When encountering difficulties on the mountain road, he stopped halfway, climbed the slope on foot, crossed the ditch, and knocked on the doors of veteran soldiers. Zhao Bin, a 90 year old veteran living in Qingshui Village, Gunan Street, Qijiang District, never imagined that one day a stranger would come to his home specifically to listen to his battle story on the Korean War. That day, they sat on their knees and talked for a long time. At the moment of parting, Yang Xiuping imprinted a handprint on Zhao Bin's left hand. Looking closely at the red handprint, the middle part of each finger is "hollowed out". Back on the battlefield, Zhao Bin was shot in his left arm and suffered severe injuries, almost requiring amputation. Later, although this arm was preserved, it suffered from the sequelae of being unable to flip and fingers being unable to straighten. Yang Xiuping recalled that Zhao Bin tried his best to cooperate that day, but still couldn't leave a full handprint. There are many stories like this Speaking of veteran Shao Zelong from Tuanjie Village in Guofu Town, Qijiang District, Yang Xiuping is full of emotion. Shao Zelong was hospitalized in the rear hospital for over 40 days due to a right leg injury sustained during the battle. As the squad leader of the machine gun squad, Shao Zelong kept thinking about his comrades in the front during his hospitalization. With his wounds still not fully healed, he returned to the company to continue fighting. After returning to his homeland, Shao Zelong voluntarily gave up disability assessment. When asked about the reason, this veteran who has been farming in the countryside for decades said that he does not want to burden the country. Over a period of 2 years, Yang Xiuping visited a total of 66 veterans of the Korean War. In addition to recording and organizing the battle stories of the veterans, Yang Xiuping also took photos of their certificates of merit, commemorative medals, etc., and compiled them into a book together. These materials were later collected by the Qijiang Museum. To record the stories of veterans, it is even more important to tell them well. In recent years, the Qijiang District Veterans Affairs Bureau and other units have formed a team to report on veteran soldiers, with Yang Xiuping actively participating. When preaching, Yang Xiuping always carries a small box containing some veteran's certificates of merit, commemorative medals, as well as items such as torches for marching lighting and bark for hunger relief. His vivid and emotional storytelling, combined with physical objects, repeatedly moved the audience on site. Yang Xingfang felt both heartbroken and understanding when she talked about her elderly husband, who was leaning on a hiking stick and walking slowly on the mountain road, persistently searching for veterans of the Korean War. Whether it's searching for veterans or enthusiastically helping others, every thing Lao Yang does is sincere and happy. That's due to his military and people's complex, "Yang Xingfang said. There is a dirt road in Shuangshan Village, Guofu Town, Qijiang District, Yang Xiuping's hometown. It is dusty on sunny days and muddy and difficult to walk on rainy days. The early completion of a smooth cement road is the common wish of the villagers. After learning that there was a funding gap for the hardened road surface in the village, Yang Xiuping not only took the initiative to use his savings to support it, but also, at the invitation of village officials, encouraged everyone at the village meeting and mobilized villagers to actively contribute to the collective. After coordination, many villagers donated money and gave up their fields, and everyone worked together to successfully widen and harden the dirt road. In Qijiang District, the building where Yang Xiuping's family lives has more than 200 households. There are 5 steps from the underground garage to the elevator, making it difficult for wheelchairs, strollers, and other vehicles to pass through. Everyone is worried about the "elevator to slope" project. Yang Xiuping contacted the property management department on behalf of the residents and learned that the renovation of supporting facilities in the community requires the consent of more than two-thirds of the residents. For several consecutive nights thereafter, he waited at the entrance of the hallway for residents returning home, collecting everyone's signatures. Soon, the "ladder to slope" project was successfully promoted. Nowadays, when it comes to the scene of Yang Xiuping wrapped in a coat and collecting signatures on a winter night, everyone still praises him. During the interview, the author met Zhao Changbing, a resident in his 80s. Once, Zhao Changbing sent his granddaughter to school, but the bus was delayed and was about to be late. In a moment of desperation, Zhao Changbing knocked on Yang Xiuping's door for help. Without hesitation, Yang Xiuping immediately drove the child to school. Since then, Yang Xiuping took the initiative to greet the community, and whenever a neighbor needed a car for urgent matters, he voluntarily picked it up and dropped it off at any time. Running a good relay of love and being enthusiastic about serving residents is a good thing, but Yang Xiuping is still in his seventies. Someone advised him to pay attention to his health, but Yang Xiuping had his own persistence: "I am an old party member and veteran who has been educated by the party and the army for a lifetime. A life of dedication is the happiest. Although I am old, I always want to contribute to society and the people, so that I can feel at ease." I have learned that more than a decade ago, Yang Xiuping signed body and organ donation agreements with relevant departments in Kunming and Qijiang, hoping to contribute to the medical cause. Surprisingly and admiringly, under the leadership of Yang Xiuping, his relatives and friends never understood, from opposition to support, and 11 people signed agreements with relevant departments to donate their bodies and organs. Yang Xiuping's elder sister, Yang Xiuhua, has been a member of the Communist Party of China for 66 years and has served as the village women's director, living in the countryside for her entire life. Under the influence of Yang Xiuping, she voluntarily proposed the idea of donating her body. It's a good thing and my wish to contribute to the country, "Yang Xiuhua said. A few years ago, Yang Xiuping built a "comma" pattern covering an area of about 6 square meters using cement and stones near the old house in Shuangshan Village, Guofu Town. Yang Xiuping said that he wants to use this to motivate himself, 'The relay of love has no end, and the road to helping others never stops.'. (New Society)
