The world's largest single scale calcium formate production facility has been put into operation

On December 24th, it was learned from Tianjin University that the high-value utilization of exhaust gas from a 50000 ton/year steel plant in Shandong to produce calcium formate has been successfully put into operation recently. This is the world's largest single scale production facility for calcium formate, utilizing the complete set of technology for synthesizing calcium formate through calcium hydroxide carbonylation developed by the One Carbon Chemical Engineering team at Tianjin University. Nowadays, the exhaust emissions from the metallurgical and chemical industries account for over 45% of China's total industrial air pollutant emissions. Among them, various typical processes, such as steel plant tail gas, blue charcoal tail gas, calcium carbide tail gas, yellow phosphorus tail gas, etc., contain a large amount of carbon monoxide (CO) resources. However, currently the vast majority of these resources are consumed as fuel, which not only fails to fully realize their value, but also causes significant CO2 emissions. How to enrich and convert CO in these industrial exhaust gases to produce high-value chemicals? This is a major issue that urgently needs to be addressed in promoting industrial transformation and upgrading, and helping China achieve its "dual carbon" goals. Calcium formate, as a multifunctional green additive, is internationally recognized as an excellent antibacterial calcium supplement feed additive and is widely used in fields such as construction, textiles, and chemical engineering. However, previously, the production of calcium formate generally used a neutralization process of formic acid and calcium carbonate, which not only had high costs but also had average product quality. Since 2006, the One Carbon Chemical Engineering Research Group at Tianjin University has been conducting research on the complete technology of calcium hydroxide carbonylation to synthesize calcium formate, and completed industrial demonstration in 2021. This technology uses quicklime or hydrated lime from carbide slag solid waste and CO from industrial exhaust gas as raw materials to produce high-quality calcium formate, which has the advantages of economical raw material sources, low energy consumption indicators, and good product quality. Continuous production technology also gives it a unique advantage in large-scale industries. It is reported that the One Carbon Chemical Engineering Research Group of Tianjin University has established a long-term cooperation with Shandong Asde Technology Co., Ltd. to conduct high-value application research on the tail gas of steel mills produced by its parent company Shiheng Special Steel. The world's largest single set of 50000 tons/year calcium formate production equipment will be completed and put into operation in October 2024. The device completed the transition from civil construction to full load production in just 6 months, helping enterprises achieve both energy conservation, carbon reduction, and economic benefits.
