Zhangzhou Ancient City is located on the north bank of Xixi River in Jiulong River, with a history of more than 1330 years and a total protected area of about 53 hectares. It is the most valuable core part of Zhangzhou's historical and cultural city (Tang and Song Zicheng in the historical urban area). In 2006, Zhangzhou puppetry performance and puppetry head carving were both included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list. The central axis of the ancient city and the axis of the government office still exist today, making it one of the most well preserved Tang and Song dynasties cities in Fujian Province. It is also an important part of the first national cultural and ecological protection zone in China - the Minnan Cultural and Ecological Protection Zone. In recent years, the ancient city of Zhangzhou has undergone protection and development, gradually becoming a cultural tourism complex that integrates culture, tourism, life, and entrepreneurship. The characteristics of "old street sentiment, slow life, Minnan flavor, Republican style, and Taiwan overseas Chinese connection" have become increasingly prominent. In 2023, Zhangzhou Ancient City was selected as a "National Tourist and Leisure Block", with an annual passenger flow of over 25 million people. (New Society)
