Make premarital medical services more convenient and accessible

2024-11-01

Recently, various measures have been taken in various regions to provide "one-stop" premarital examination services for the public, including diversified promotion of premarital examination knowledge, offering free services, giving small gifts, and creating a comfortable environment. These measures are conducive to enhancing people's enthusiasm and initiative to participate in free premarital check ups, and improving the rate of premarital check ups. Pre marital medical examination, abbreviated as "premarital examination", mainly checks whether both men and women have diseases that affect fertility and offspring health, such as genetic diseases, infectious diseases, reproductive system diseases, etc., and then takes targeted preventive measures. It is an important part of preventing birth defects and the basic guarantee for a happy marriage and family. In recent years, with the development of the economy and society, people's awareness of premarital health checkups has gradually increased, and various regions have actively promoted premarital health care and birth defect prevention and control work, continuously improving service capabilities. However, according to the data, currently nearly 1/4 of new couples in China have not participated in premarital check ups. Why are there still many couples who haven't undergone premarital check ups when they are so important and free? On the one hand, it reflects that the popularization rate of premarital health knowledge still needs to be further improved; On the other hand, it also indicates that there is still room for improvement in the quality of premarital medical services. Not participating in premarital health check ups, from a family perspective, may not be able to detect potential health problems in a timely manner, which may affect future marital life. If suffering from genetic diseases, it is also possible to have unhealthy children, casting a shadow over family life; From a national perspective, the existence of a population that has not participated in premarital check ups hinders targeted and timely prevention of birth defects, which is not conducive to high-quality population development. Therefore, a dual approach must be taken to further increase the premarital medical examination rate. Strengthening the popularization of premarital health knowledge is a fundamental task. Departments such as health and civil affairs, employers, communities, and family planning associations need to focus on topics such as birth defect prevention, eugenics, and offspring health, and carry out premarital health knowledge popularization activities for corresponding groups. Through popular science forms, they should promote healthy marriage and childbirth concepts and behaviors, and guide the establishment of the concept that "everyone is the first person responsible for their own health". The popularization of premarital medical knowledge in rural areas needs to be strengthened. We can fully mobilize the power of rural family doctor teams to strengthen the popularization of premarital health knowledge among villagers. The county-level, township level, and village level associations of the Family Planning Association can leverage their advantages of wide coverage, large number of members, and strong professionalism to provide services such as reproductive health consultation and guidance on eugenics, enabling more unmarried rural residents to master premarital health knowledge. We need to continuously optimize our services to make premarital checkups convenient and accessible. It is a good policy for the benefit of the people that free premarital check ups are adopted in various regions. But a few medical and health institutions believe that the premarital medical examination business does not generate revenue and marginalizes it, such as moving the premarital medical examination business to the suburbs, not having electronic report forms, and not providing services on weekends, all of which bring inconvenience to people who plan to participate in premarital medical examinations. Solving these problems will help improve the convenience and popularity of premarital checkups. Relevant institutions should also take the initiative to provide more heartwarming services for the public participating in marriage checkups, such as setting up marriage checkups service hours according to their marriage needs, and increasing marriage checkups service windows and departments before and after some peak marriage registration days. Pre marital examination is an effective measure to promote reproductive health, prevent birth defects, and improve population quality. Improving the marriage check-up rate is a systematic project that benefits the people. We look forward to strengthening cooperation and continuous efforts from all regions and departments to safeguard people's marital happiness and the health of future generations. (New Society)
