The Shenzhen China Corridor stimulates the 'multiplier effect' of integrated development in the Greater Bay Area

In autumn, on the Lingding Ocean, the Shenzhong Passage is long and lying on the waves, connecting the urban agglomeration on the east and west sides of the the Pearl River Estuary. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that the Shenzhen China Corridor is another mega transportation project built in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area after the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macao Bridge, which has overcome multiple world-class technical challenges and created multiple world records. Since its opening on June 30th this year, the Shenzhen China Corridor has become a pioneer in stimulating the "multiplier effect" of integrated development in the Greater Bay Area. Super intelligence creates super engineering. The construction of the Deep Middle Passage began in February 2017 and is the world's first cross sea cluster project that integrates "bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater interconnectivity". Faced with a long list of world-class construction challenges, hundreds of participating units and tens of thousands of builders worked together for seven years to build the world's largest span offshore steel box girder suspension bridge on the Lingdingyang, lay the world's first two-way eight lane steel shell concrete immersed tube tunnel, and create the world's first underwater highway hub interchange, setting 10 "world records" with excellent strength. As one of the key control projects of the Shenzhen China Channel, the bridge deck of the Shenzhen China Bridge is 91 meters high, and it is also located in the open waters of the the Pearl River Estuary, where strong typhoons frequently occur. The problem of wind resistance is prominent. Faced with technological challenges, we organized multiple universities and research institutions to conduct parallel research for more than three years using a four in one approach of industry, academia, research, and application. We have developed a new type of combined aerodynamic control technology, which has significantly improved the wind resistance performance of long-span integral steel box girder suspension bridges for the first time in the world Song Shenyou, Chief Engineer of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Channel Management Center of Guangdong Provincial Transportation Group, said that the project has raised the critical flutter wind speed of large-span steel box girder suspension bridges from the world recognized 70 meters/second to 88 meters/second, breaking the authoritative judgment abroad in one fell swoop. The Shenzhong Tunnel is the world's longest two-way eight lane underwater immersed tube tunnel. Its technical characteristics of "super width, widening, deep burial, and large sedimentation" are huge challenges faced by builders. This structure is the first large-scale application internationally, and it is facing a gap in the entire industry chain domestically. Faced with the protection of relevant construction technologies from abroad, the project team is determined to innovate independently and has led more than 20 first-class scientific research teams to tackle various challenges since 2015, including steel shell manufacturing, self compacting concrete preparation, pipe joint pouring, testing, and floating installation. Song Shenyou said, "We have made a number of original innovations, which have strongly promoted the technological progress of immersed tunnels in China, and enriched the 'Chinese scheme' and 'Chinese standards' of the world's cross sea immersed tunnels." The "golden channel" is the "golden inner bay" deep and medium channel for energy storage. It has completed a key "horizontal" of the "A" shaped transportation network framework around the Pearl River estuary, enabling the two major urban agglomerations of "Shenzhen Dongguan Hui" and "Pearl River Central River" on both sides of the east and west of the the Pearl River River estuary to achieve direct cross sea connectivity, shortening the time and space distance, making the flow of people, logistics, capital and information more smooth, and becoming the "golden channel" of the "golden inner bay" of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. After the opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway, the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhongshan has been shortened from 2 hours to within 30 minutes, and the two places have joined hands to enter the "half-hour living transportation circle". According to data from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Transport, the total traffic volume of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway after 100 days of operation is about 8.9 million vehicles, and the traffic volume on October 1st during the National Day holiday reached as high as 155000 vehicles, setting a new high since its opening. From tourism to investment, from service industry to manufacturing industry, behind the flow of people, the "golden inner bay" formed on both sides of the the Pearl River is rapidly becoming a reality, and the industrial chain and innovation chain are deeply integrated. In the Shenzhen Zhongshan Economic Cooperation Zone of Zhongshan City, modern factories have sprung up one after another. BYD Zhongshan Factory Phase II is accelerating construction, and the Chengyi Flat Panel Display Device Project has been successfully completed. Currently, Shenzhen and Zhongshan are working together to cultivate new quality productivity and build several billion dollar industrial clusters such as electronic information, health and medicine, and new energy. Deng Xiaohua, chairman of Guangdong Provincial Communications Group, said that the Shenzhen China Channel, together with the "golden channels" such as Humen Bridge, Nansha Bridge and Guangzhou Shenzhen Expressway, has linked the urban agglomeration of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area into a chain, further enhancing the "gold content" of the "golden inner bay" at the mouth of the the Pearl River. The smooth road network and shared benefits of connectivity are like a resilient pole, allowing the Pearl River Delta to support both eastern and western Guangdong, further promoting the orderly transfer of industries and enhancing the Pearl River Delta's radiation and driving effect on underdeveloped areas in the province. Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province, known as the "Capital of Overseas Chinese", has ushered in a period of development opportunities for the "Bridge Economy" with the opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway. Qiao Jianwei, Vice President of Chikan Overseas Chinese Ancient Town International Tourism Resort in Jiangmen City, said that after the opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway, the travel time from Jiangmen to Shenzhen has been greatly reduced, which is conducive to promoting cultural exchanges in the Greater Bay Area and creating more opportunities for the construction and promotion of cultural and tourism brands. Nansha District of Guangzhou is located at the geographic center of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. After the completion and opening of the Nanzhong Expressway this year, Nansha District will be connected to the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway through the Wanqingsha branch line, holding hands with Shenzhen and Zhongshan on the Lingdingyang. The drive from Nansha to Shenzhen will be shortened to less than 20 minutes, and the drive to Zhongshan city area will be shortened to less than 15 minutes. Liu Wei, member of the Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Nansha District Committee, said that the opening of the Shenzhen Zhongshan Passage brings opportunities for Nansha to better integrate into the "Golden Inner Bay", promote the acceleration of the planning and industrial introduction of the Biological Valley, Digital Valley, Health Valley, and Wanqingsha Southern Area in Nansha, and undertake innovative resources from both the east and west banks. At present, the total length of highways in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has exceeded 5300 kilometers, and the rapid transportation network has basically taken shape. Lin Feiming, Director of the Department of Transport of Guangdong Province, said, "Guangdong will continuously improve its road network communication capacity and service efficiency, promote the further improvement and smoothness of the high-speed road network along the Shenzhen Zhongshan Expressway and surrounding areas, and provide efficient and safe 'hard connectivity' support for the development of the Greater Bay Area
