2023-03-23

Argentine President Fernandez announced on the 21st that Argentina has decided to rejoin the South American Union of Nations. In a statement issued by the Argentine presidential palace on the same day, Fernandez said that Latin American countries are on the same boat and should strengthen unity and revitalize the South American Union of Nations as soon as possible. The Association of South American States was established in May 2008 and consists of 12 member countries, including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Guyana, and Suriname. Since 2018, eight countries, including Argentina and Brazil, have successively withdrawn or suspended their membership. On January 23, this year, Fernandez and Brazilian President Lula held a meeting at the Argentine presidential palace. The two sides expressed their hope to strengthen the role of the Common Market of the South, reactivate the Union of South American States, and advance discussions on the establishment of a common currency for South America.
