2023-02-03

On February 1, birds roosted in Futian Mangrove Wetland in Shenzhen, Guangdong. February 2 is the 27th World Wetland Day. The reporter learned from the State Forestry and Grassland Administration that China has added 18 international important wetlands, including Yeya Lake in Yanqing, Beijing, Jiuqu 18 Bay in Daxing'an Mountains, Heilongjiang, and Baima Lake in Huai'an, Jiangsu, with a total of 82; The area is 7.647 million hectares, ranking the fourth in the world. The theme of this year's World Wetland Day is "Wetland Restoration". On the same day, China held a home publicity event in Xixi, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and released the monitoring results of the ecological status of China's internationally important wetlands in 2022. The results show that the ecological status of international important wetlands in China has remained stable, the total area of wetlands has increased compared with the previous year, the water quality has shown a positive trend, and the water supply status has remained stable. The richness of biodiversity has improved, with 2391 species of wetland plants distributed. Wetland protection and restoration have achieved remarkable results, and degraded wetlands in Heilongjiang, Hubei, Shandong and Hainan have been effectively restored. Since joining the Convention on Wetlands in 1992, China has actively responded to global challenges such as wetland area reduction and ecological function degradation. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the central government has invested 9.87 billion yuan to implement 53 wetland protection and restoration projects, more than 2000 wetland ecological benefit compensation, conversion of farmland to wetland, wetland protection and restoration subsidy projects, 467400 hectares of degraded wetland restoration, and 202600 hectares of new wetland area. Last year, the Law of the People's Republic of China on Wetland Protection came into effect, and China's wetland protection entered a new stage of legalization, promoting the implementation of the results of the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Wetlands, and preparing to build the "International Mangrove Center" in Shenzhen. As an important participant, contributor and leader in the global wetland protection and restoration, China will actively fulfill its obligations under the Convention, continue to strengthen the protection of the authenticity and integrity of wetlands, implement the national wetland protection plan and major wetland protection projects, incorporate more important wetlands into the management of natural reserves, and improve the international exchange and cooperation platform. At the event site, the representatives of the National Wetland Park who passed the pilot acceptance in 2022 were also awarded cards, and the youth representatives read out the wetland protection proposal. The event was sponsored by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration and the People's Government of Zhejiang Province, and attended by more than 100 heads of forestry and grass authorities from relevant provinces (regions and cities), ambassadors from some countries of the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands in China and representatives of non-governmental organizations at home and abroad.
