German Defense Minister: German Federal Parliament will decide whether to spend 10 billion euros to buy F-35 fighter aircraft

2022-12-08

According to Reuters, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht said on the 6th local time that the German Federal Assembly would decide in mid December whether to purchase the F-35 fighter jet produced by American military giant Lockheed Martin at a total price of 10 billion euros (about 73 billion yuan). "We will discuss a huge project at the next meeting of the (Parliament) Budget Committee on December 14, that is, the total amount of F-35... is 10 billion euros." Lambrecht told reporters during his trip to western Germany. The report mentioned that Germany plans to purchase 35 F-35 stealth fighter jets, including supporting missiles and other weapons and equipment, and the first 8 fighter jets (if the transaction is concluded) will be delivered in 2026. These F-35s are intended to replace the increasingly old German "Tornado" fighters. The F-35 will become the only German fighter jet capable of carrying the US nuclear bomb. The report also mentioned that the purchase of F-35 aircrafts with 10 billion euros would be the first major project for Germany to use 100 billion euros of German "special fund". Earlier this year, the German Federal Senate approved a 100 billion euro special defense fund bill. According to Reuters, this special fund aims to restore the weapons and equipment of the Bundeswehr to the standard level after decades of wear and tear after the end of the cold war.
