The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced on August 21st that it will collaborate with Changguang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. (Changguang Satellite) to launch a multispectral optical satellite called "Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Xiongbin 1" at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center to monitor remote sensing data related to global environment, disasters, and sustainable development, contributing to the development of national remote sensing research. As a result, HKUST will become the first higher education institution in Hong Kong to launch a satellite. This satellite is mainly used for scientific research purposes, with a remote sensing image resolution of 0.5 meters and an imaging width of over 150 kilometers. Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will first use remote sensing data provided by satellites to establish a digital twin system that covers all slopes in Hong Kong, monitors surface conditions, and simulates the process of landslides and social disaster response, in order to assist in improving social disaster response coordination and decision-making management. This launch was supported by Ye Zhixiong and Ye Wu Binbin, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology named this satellite "Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Xiongbin 1". HKUST signed a cooperation agreement with Changguang Satellite earlier. In addition to the "Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Xiongbin 1" satellite, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Changguang Satellite will jointly develop carbon emission remote sensing satellites, and engage in long-term deep multimodal cooperation in satellite development and monitoring data application, jointly creating a comprehensive environmental monitoring and disaster prediction system, providing scientific data for the national dual carbon goals, and helping to enhance the country's remote sensing research capabilities.
