UN officials call for humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza

2025-03-13

The Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNHCR), Filip Lazzarini, said on the 10th that allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza is crucial to maintain the progress made in the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and meet the basic needs of the people. Lazarini said at the United Nations press conference held in Geneva on the same day that Israel has banned humanitarian aid and commercial supplies from entering the Gaza Strip for nearly 10 days, and this decision threatens the lives and survival of civilians in Gaza. Lazarini also said that since the law prohibiting the operation of the Near East Relief Agency came into effect at the end of January, the agency's public services to Palestinian refugees have faced a collapse, which will lead to a dangerous vacuum in the occupied Palestinian territories and have an impact on Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. He emphasized that the sudden dissolution of the organization assisting Palestinian refugees will only deepen their suffering and will not change their refugee status. Lazarini pointed out that the large-scale demolition of buildings by Israeli security forces in the West Bank has left about 40000 Palestinian refugees with nowhere to go, resulting in the largest displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank since 1967.
