AGI will enter the workforce, but humanity is far from reaching a consensus

2025-01-09

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently published a ten thousand word blog post reviewing OpenAI's entrepreneurial journey and outlook for 2025. Our vision will not change, and tactics will continue to evolve, "Altman said in the long article. Now OpenAI is confident that it knows how to build AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). I believe that by 2025, people will see the first batch of AI intelligent agents "joining the workforce" and fundamentally changing what companies produce. We still believe that repeatedly handing excellent tools into people's hands will bring great and widely distributed results. Altman stated that OpenAI is shifting its focus towards true superintelligence. "With superintelligence, we can do anything else. Superintelligence tools can greatly accelerate the speed of scientific discovery and innovation, far beyond our own capabilities, thereby significantly increasing wealth and prosperity." As for AGI, Altman did not provide a particularly clear definition. He said, "My rough idea is that when an AI system can perform the work of highly skilled humans in important positions, I would call it AGI. Of course, is it to complete all or part of the work? Can you start with a computing program and decide to become a doctor on your own? Can we reach the level of the top talents in this field, or can we only reach the top 98%? How much autonomy does it have? Altman also stated that he does not yet have particularly clear answers to these questions. It can be said that at the beginning of the development of AI technology, people's concerns about whether future job positions will be replaced by artificial intelligence have never stopped. And now, the leading companies in artificial intelligence have provided a clear timeline and roadmap for this. If on April 2, 2024, the first AI programmer in China officially entered the threshold of Alibaba Cloud under the ID AI001, which was a small attempt for AI to replace human work, then the replacement of AGI has greater initiative and proactivity. This substitution will shift from human-machine collaboration to machines with artificial intelligence that can autonomously process information and make decisions through self-learning and adaptive algorithms, and even demonstrate creative thinking in certain fields. Of course, we can also see that although Altman appears confident on the surface, he also has moments of confusion. On January 5th, Altman posted a sentence on social media: 'The singularity is near, unclear which side.'. Bill Gates' attitude is quite optimistic and bold. At the 2024 Davos Annual Meeting, he stated that in the next five years, AI will greatly improve productivity and make everyone's life easier. "The world will become richer, you can work less, but have more." At the same annual meeting, IMF Managing Director Olga stated that artificial intelligence will affect about 40% of jobs worldwide, and the higher the skill requirements, the greater the impact of artificial intelligence. Elon Musk's view is even more pessimistic. He believes that developing artificial intelligence is like summoning a devil, and in the future, humans will become pets of artificial intelligence. We must be cautious about the development of artificial intelligence to avoid its potential negative impacts. It is still difficult to draw a conclusion on whether AI substitution is a disaster or a blessing for global humanity facing employment difficulties. Intelligence is not just a technical issue, it also involves complex human traits such as consciousness, emotion, creativity, and moral judgment, which are difficult for current AI systems to imitate and replicate. Even if AGI surpasses humans in cognitive ability, how will we interact with such intelligent agents? Should it enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as humans? When people celebrate the remarkable breakthroughs of AI, they should also calmly face and reflect on the new challenges and even difficulties it brings us. But one thing is certain, no matter how great the differences between humans and AI are, and how much uncertainty it will bring to humanity, its coexistence with humans will be a definite fact for a considerable period of time in the future.
