2024-12-05

The 2024 World Traditional Medicine Conference will be held at the National Convention Center in Beijing from December 3rd to 4th. Yu Yanhong, Director of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, stated at the opening ceremony of the conference that the 2024 World Traditional Medicine Conference is an academic event in the field of traditional medicine, which will have a positive and far-reaching impact on promoting the high-quality development of traditional medicine and building a community of human health. 'Health for all' is a shared vision of all humanity and an important component of building a community with a shared future for mankind. The theme of this conference is "Diversity, Inheritance, and Innovation: Benefiting the World with Traditional Medicine". It is jointly organized by China and the World Health Organization, aiming to build a cooperation platform for the exchange of traditional medicine in the world, promote the balanced development of traditional medicine in various countries, better achieve the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and contribute to the construction of a human health community. In a video speech, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, talked about the contribution of Tu Youyou's isolation of artemisinin to the treatment of malaria worldwide, stating that China has always been in a leading position in combining traditional and modern medicine. Last year's United Nations General Assembly, the World Health Organization's Traditional Medicine Strategy reaffirmed the need to strengthen the evidence base for safe and effective traditional medicines and supported their inclusion in national health systems. This indicates that traditional medicine is further emphasizing the concept of evidence-based medicine. In response to the issue of further integrating traditional medicine, Saya Peucala, Director of the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization, emphasized that in the development of traditional medicine, it is necessary for all countries to strengthen the path of evidence-based medicine, further integrate traditional medicine into the basic treatment system, and further strengthen capacity building, scientific research construction, and knowledge sharing to help traditional medicine innovate and conduct scientific research. Only in this way can traditional medicine achieve the goal of full coverage of basic healthcare. Lei Haichao, Director of the National Health Commission, stated that we have successively launched a batch of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment plans, as well as suitable technologies for traditional Chinese medicine. We are also implementing the construction of a "Western learning in Chinese" talent team to cultivate talents who can integrate the two types of medicine; We are promoting the establishment of a multidisciplinary and cross departmental collaborative innovation system, mechanism, and work platform for traditional Chinese medicine; We are actively planning the "New Era Shennong Tasting Hundred Herbs Action", hoping to work with countries around the world to explore plant resources with medicinal value and enrich traditional medical treatment methods. It is understood that the influence of traditional Chinese medicine is constantly increasing internationally and has become a new field of cooperation among countries. At present, China has signed cooperation documents on traditional medicine with more than 40 countries, regions and international organizations, and is building 30 high-quality overseas centers of traditional Chinese medicine in the "the Belt and Road" countries. 113 member countries of the World Health Organization have approved the use of acupuncture and moxibustion. China has also established 31 export bases for traditional Chinese medicine services, continuously promoting the rapid development of traditional Chinese medicine service trade. Yu Yanhong stated that China will continue to deepen high-level collaboration between traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, strengthen service capabilities, accelerate the expansion of high-quality traditional Chinese medicine medical resources and regional balanced layout, fully leverage the important role of traditional Chinese medicine in disease treatment and rehabilitation, and provide traditional Chinese medicine services covering the entire process and life cycle of diseases to the people.
