Xi Jinping: Speech at the Symposium on Literary and Artistic Work

2024-10-16

Today, here is a gathering of talented writers and artists, as well as emerging literary and artistic talents. Some comrades are familiar with them in the past, while others are meeting for the first time. Nice to meet everyone. The cause of literature and art is an important cause for the Party and the people, and the literary and artistic front is an important front for the Party and the people. For a long time, the vast number of literary and artistic workers have been committed to artistic creation, performance, research, and dissemination, working hard in their respective fields and serving the people, achieving remarkable results and making important contributions. With the joint efforts of everyone, the cultural and artistic garden in our country is flourishing and fruitful, presenting a vivid scene of prosperity and development. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone and extend sincere greetings to literary and artistic workers across the country! I have been considering holding this symposium today for a long time, and only now do I have the opportunity. The main purpose is to listen to everyone's opinions and suggestions, analyze the current situation, exchange ideas with everyone, and discuss the grand plan for the prosperity and development of Chinese literature and art. Just now, the speeches of several comrades were all very good, with ideas and insights, and I was very inspired after listening to them. Below, I will discuss 5 questions with everyone. The first question: To achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, it is necessary to promote the prosperity of Chinese culture. Why should we attach great importance to literature and art work? This issue should first be examined in the context of the overall development trends in our country and the world. I said that realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream of the Chinese people since modern times. Today, we are closer than ever before in history to the goal of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and we have more confidence and ability than ever before to achieve this goal. To achieve this goal, we must attach great importance to and fully utilize the important role of literature and art workers. Culture is an important force for the survival and development of a nation. Every leap forward in human society and every sublimation of human civilization is accompanied by historic cultural progress. The Chinese nation has a civilization history of over 5000 years, and before modern times, China had always been one of the world's great powers. Throughout thousands of years of historical changes, the Chinese nation has never been smooth sailing, encountering countless difficulties and hardships. However, we have all persevered and walked through them. One important reason for this is that generations of Chinese people have cultivated and developed a unique and profound Chinese culture, providing strong spiritual support for the Chinese nation to overcome difficulties and continue to thrive. German philosopher Jaspers wrote in his book "The Origin and Objectives of History" that the period from 800 BC to 200 BC was the "Axis Age" of human civilization, a period of significant breakthroughs in the spirit of human civilization. At that time, great thinkers emerged from civilizations such as ancient Greece, ancient China, and ancient India, whose ideological principles shaped different cultural traditions and have always influenced human life. This passage is very profound and insightful. Throughout history, the reason why the Chinese nation has gained status and influence in the world is not through military tactics or external expansion, but through the powerful appeal and attraction of Chinese culture. Our ancestors have long recognized the principle of 'if a distant person is dissatisfied, then cultivate one's literary and moral character'. Explaining the endowment, characteristics, and spirit of the Chinese nation, one important aspect is to persuade people with morality and culture. History and reality have shown that human civilization is jointly created by various countries and ethnic groups around the world. Wherever I visit, what I am most fascinated by is the cultural achievements created by people of various countries and ethnic groups. There are countless treasures of world civilization, and here I will give examples of several countries and ethnic groups. Ancient Greece produced myths, fables, sculptures, and architectural art that had a profound impact on human civilization. The tragedies and comedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes are classic works of Greek art. Russia has masters such as Pushkin, Gogol, Lermontov, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Nekrasov, Chernyshevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Gorky, Sholokhov, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky Korsakov, Rachmaninov, and Repin. France has masters such as Rabelais, Lafontaine, Moliere, Stendhal, Balzac, Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Alexandre Dumas, Maupassant, Romain Rolland, Sartre, Camus, Miller, Manet, Degas, C é zanne, Monet, Rodin, Berlioz, Bizet, Debussy, etc. Britain has masters such as Chaucer, Milton, Byron, Shelley, Keats, Dickens, Hardy, George Bernard Shaw, and Turner. Germany has masters such as Lessing, Goethe, Schiller, Heine, Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Wagner, Brahms, etc. The United States has masters such as Hawthorne, Longfellow, Stowe, Whitman, Mark Twain, Dreiser, Jack London, and Hemingway. I recently visited India, and the Indian people also have extraordinary creative vitality in literature and art. Around 1000 BC, four collections were formed, namely the Rigveda, Addavaveda, Samadha, and Nymphalida. During the pilgrimage of Faxian and Xuanzang, Indian poetry, dance, painting, religious architecture, and sculpture reached a high level, and Tagore had a worldwide influence. There are many more in our country, from Laozi, Confucius, Zhuangzi, Mencius, Qu Yuan, Wang Xizhi, Li Bai, Du Fu, Su Shi, Xin Qiji, Guan Hanqing, Cao Xueqin, to "Lu Guo Mao Ba Lao Cao" (Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Mao Dun, Ba Jin, Lao She, Cao Yu), to Nie Er, Xian Xinghai, Mei Lanfang, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, from the Book of Songs and Chu Ci to Han Fu, Tang Poetry, Song Ci, Yuan Qu, and Ming and Qing novels, from "The Biography of King Gesar", "Manas" to "Jiang Ge'er" epic, from the New Culture Movement in the May Fourth period, the establishment of New China to today's reform and opening up, brilliant literary and artistic works have emerged. Master, he left behind a vast sea of literary and artistic masterpieces, not only providing rich nourishment for the Chinese nation, but also contributing brilliant chapters to world civilization. History and reality have proven that the Chinese nation has strong cultural creativity. At every major historical juncture, culture can sense the changes in national destiny, stand at the forefront of the times, and take the lead in the era, cheering and calling for billions of people and the great motherland. Chinese culture not only adheres to its roots but also keeps pace with the times, which has enabled the Chinese nation to maintain firm national confidence and strong repair capabilities, cultivate common emotions and values, common ideals and spirits. Without the prosperity and flourishing of Chinese culture, there can be no great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. The rejuvenation of a nation requires strong material strength as well as strong spiritual strength. Without the active guidance of advanced culture, the great enrichment of the people's spiritual world, and the continuous strengthening of national spiritual strength, a country or a nation cannot stand tall among the world's nations. Literature and art are the clarion call for the advancement of the times, representing the style and leading the trend of an era. In the European Renaissance movement, literary giants such as Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Montaigne, Cervantes, Shakespeare, and others sounded the cry of a new era and opened people's hearts. When talking about the Renaissance movement, Engels said, "It was an era that needed giants and produced giants, who were giants in terms of thinking ability, passion, and character, as well as in terms of versatility and knowledge. In the history of China's development, cultural development, including literature and art, is also closely linked to the development of the Chinese nation. In the pre Qin period, China experienced a flourishing situation of a hundred schools of thought competing, ushering in a peak period of ancient Chinese culture. At the beginning of the 20th century, in the May Fourth New Culture Movement, the innovative trend that originated in the field of literature and art had a significant impact on social change and became an important engine for the national ideological liberation movement. Now, the whole Party and people of all ethnic groups in the country are advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics step by step in accordance with the goals established at the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the reform tasks proposed at the Third Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Realizing the two centenary goals and realizing the Chinese Dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is a long-term and arduous great undertaking. A great cause requires a great spirit. To achieve this great cause, the role of literature and art is irreplaceable, and literary workers have great potential. Literary and artistic workers should understand the status and role of literature and art from such a high perspective, and recognize the historical mission and responsibility they bear. Mr. Lu Xun said that to transform the spiritual world of countrymen, literature and art should be the first. Raising the banner of spirit, establishing spiritual pillars, and building spiritual homes all rely on literature and art. When towering buildings stand everywhere on the land of our country, the building of the Chinese national spirit should also stand tall and majestic. Chinese writers and artists should become pioneers, vanguards, and advocates of the times. Through more literary and artistic works with bones, morals, and warmth, they should write and record the great practices of the people and the progress requirements of the times, demonstrate the beauty of faith and nobility, promote the Chinese spirit, unite the strength of China, and inspire people of all ethnic groups in the country to move towards the future with vitality. The second question: Creating excellent works that are worthy of the times. "Articles are written in accordance with the times, and songs and poems are written in accordance with the events." Measuring the literary and artistic achievements of an era ultimately depends on the works. The most fundamental way to promote the prosperity and development of literature and art is to create and produce excellent works that are worthy of our great nation and great era. Without excellent works, no matter how lively or flashy other things are, they are only superficial and cannot truly delve into the spiritual world of the people. They cannot touch the soul of people and resonate with their thoughts. Literary and artistic workers should always remember that creation is their central task, and their works are the foundation of their existence. They should calm down, strive for excellence in creation, and dedicate the best spiritual food to the people. Excellent literary and artistic works reflect the cultural creativity and level of a country or a nation. Attracting, guiding, and inspiring people requires good works, and promoting Chinese culture to go global also requires good works. Therefore, we must take the creation and production of excellent works as the central link of literary and artistic work, and strive to create and produce more excellent works that spread contemporary Chinese values, reflect the spirit of Chinese culture, reflect the aesthetic pursuit of Chinese people, and organically integrate ideology, artistry, and appreciation, so as to form a trend of "dragon and literature, hundred bamboo tripods, and writing skills can be carried alone". Excellent works are not limited to one style, form, or figure. They should have both the beauty of spring and snow, as well as the charm of the lower class. They should stand tall and cover the entire world. As long as there is positive energy, infectivity, the ability to warm the soul, enlighten the mind, spread widely, and be loved by the people, this is an excellent work. Literature and art are deeply integrated into people's lives, including career and life, prosperity and adversity, dreams and expectations, love and hate, existence and death. All aspects of human life can find inspiration in literary works. Literature and art have the greatest appeal and influence on young people. When I was young, I read a lot of literary works and explored various books that could be found at that time. Not only do many of the wonderful chapters and timeless texts still remain fresh in my memory, but I also gained a lot of life truths from them. Literature and art are also the best way for different countries and ethnic groups to understand and communicate with each other. Last March, when I visited Russia and had a discussion with Russian sinologists, I mentioned that I had read many works by Russian writers, such as Chernyshevsky's "What to Do?" when I was young, which caused a great shock in my heart. This year 3
