Taking these medications can affect vision

As the old saying goes, "medicine is three parts poisonous." While treating diseases, there may be some side effects, but many people do not necessarily understand the harm that unscientific medication can cause to the eyes. In addition to affecting vision, symptoms such as edema and bleeding may also occur, and in severe cases, it may even lead to blindness. This condition is medically known as drug-induced eye disease. In recent years, it has been found that drug-induced cataracts, optic neuritis, retinitis, and other conditions have been caused by improper medication. Today we will take a look at the drugs found in clinical practice that can cause eye diseases if taken improperly. The indiscriminate use and abuse of antibiotics have become commonplace, but their damage to the eyes has not been taken seriously. Penicillin can cause allergic conjunctivitis, causing conjunctival congestion, edema, itching, and foreign body sensation. In severe cases, white secretions may appear in the cornea, and even corneal ulcers may occur; Streptomycin not only causes significant damage to the eighth cranial nerve, but also causes retrobulbar optic neuritis, retinitis, and optic nerve atrophy; Sulfonamide can cause myopia and blurred vision. People who take excessive amounts of antipyretic and analgesic aspirin may experience allergic conjunctivitis, increased intraocular pressure, cataracts, congestion and ulceration of the eyelid conjunctiva, corneal ulceration, and optic neuritis. Indomethacin and Yantongxikang, which are commonly used in antipyretic and analgesic drugs, should also be used reasonably, otherwise eye discomfort, decreased vision, and retinal and vitreous lesions may occur. For patients with heart disease treated with antiarrhythmic drugs such as amiodarone, continuous use for 1 to 3 months may result in corneal granular deposition, blindness, and visual halo; Long term use of propranolol can cause vision loss in patients. The antiepileptic drug phenytoin sodium has a strong excitatory effect on the balance center of the cerebellum. Excessive dosage can cause cerebellar dysfunction, causing nystagmus, ophthalmic muscle paralysis, reduced field of vision, and blurred vision. Frequent use of antimalarial drugs such as quinine and chloroquine can cause them to deposit on the retina, leading to degeneration of the retinal nerve epithelium and decreased vision. The anti tuberculosis drug isoniazid can cause progressive optic nerve atrophy and sudden optic neuritis in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The use of ethambutol can lead to retinal hemorrhage and green disorders. If used in combination with rifampicin, the symptoms are more prominent. Long term use of oral contraceptives can affect the coagulation mechanism of the body, leading to occlusion or thrombosis of small arteries and veins in the eye, and causing local visual impairment in the eyes. Poisoning by cardiac glycoside drugs such as digitalis, digoxin, and sildenafil can cause retinal disorders such as visual impairment, color vision disorders, and blurred vision. Long term use of chlorpromazine as an antipsychotic drug can cause foreign body sensation, photophobia, burning pain, and corneal opacity in the eyes of patients. In severe cases, it can lead to visual field defects, dark adaptation disorders, decreased vision, star shaped cataracts, and night blindness. Antihistamines affect the wetting effect of the lacrimal gland on the eyes, causing irritation to the wearer of the corneal contact lens. Long term use of corticosteroid drugs such as dexamethasone, cortisone, prednisone, and flumethasone can weaken the body's immune system, cause elevated intraocular pressure, and trigger eye infections, glaucoma, and cataracts. The use of diuretics such as dihydroquercetin can lead to decreased intraocular pressure, anterior displacement of the lens, and retinal detachment
