Facial paralysis is more common in winter, and it is important to keep your face warm and protected from the cold

Recently, the temperature has dropped, and many hospitals have received patients with facial paralysis symptoms such as facial asymmetry, crooked mouth, inability to close eyes, and leaking teeth due to the invasion of cold winds. Han Yuechen, the director of the lateral skull base surgery at the Second People's Hospital of Shandong Province (Shandong Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital), reminds that winter is a high incidence season for facial paralysis. It is important to pay attention to keeping warm and keeping the face windproof. After facial paralysis occurs, it is even more important to pay attention to targeted and standardized treatment. Han Yuechen introduced that facial paralysis is a common neurological disease, also known as facial nerve paralysis, which is generally divided into two types: central facial paralysis and peripheral facial paralysis. Compared with central facial paralysis, peripheral facial paralysis is more common, and patients often have affected facial movements on the entire affected side, such as crooked corners of the mouth and exposure of white with closed eyes. The disappearance of forehead lines, inability to frown, and incomplete closure of eyes are the main criteria for distinguishing peripheral facial paralysis from central facial paralysis. "There are many reasons that can cause facial paralysis. If the cold wind blows directly for a long time, the face will cause vascular spasm due to subcooling stimulation, resulting in muscle ischemia and hypoxia, decreased resistance, and secondary herpes virus infection, leading to facial paralysis." Han Yuechen said that this type of facial paralysis, also known as Bell's facial paralysis, accounts for about half of all cases of facial paralysis. Although facial paralysis is not life-threatening, it can also bring sequelae. Han Yuechen suggests that if you experience symptoms of facial paralysis, you must seek medical attention promptly within three days to achieve early detection and treatment. "If it is confirmed that it is peripheral facial paralysis, the main purpose of treatment is to restore facial nerve function as much as possible, and the treatment methods include internal medicine treatment and surgical treatment." Han Yuechen said that for early onset Bell's facial paralysis, it is recommended to first use medication treatment, among which the most effective is kininoids. It is recommended to receive treatment within three days of onset and at the latest within a week. Whether facial paralysis can be restored and to what extent it can be restored is usually related to the severity of the patient's condition and whether standardized treatment is possible. It is reported that before the onset of facial paralysis in patients, there are often traces to follow. Once one side of the face is not functioning properly, the mouth is crooked, the eyes are closed, the mouth is difficult to inflate, food residue is easily trapped in the buccal space on one side during eating, or symptoms such as leakage of saliva from one corner of the mouth, numbness behind the ear, and pain around the ear occur, it is necessary to seek medical attention in a timely manner and undergo comprehensive examination and diagnosis. Facial nerve function evaluation can help determine the severity of facial paralysis in patients. After the occurrence of neuropathy, demyelinating changes may occur, but there is a certain time window, so the corresponding examination is best carried out within three days to three weeks after the occurrence of facial paralysis. In addition, imaging examinations, laboratory tests, etc. also play an important role in the diagnosis and targeted treatment of facial paralysis. How to prevent facial paralysis in cold winter? Han Yuechen suggests that when cold air or cold currents come, be sure to take precautions against the cold and keep warm when going out, and protect your head and face. Especially when riding a bicycle or electric bike, be sure to wear a warm hat, scarf, or helmet to avoid the cold wind blowing directly on your face. Secondly, it is not advisable to go out when sweating. After washing your hair, quickly blow dry it and stay indoors for a while before going out. In addition, it is important to maintain sufficient sleep and exercise appropriately, avoid staying up late, and enhance the body's immune system. Finally, it is important to adjust your diet and avoid excessive alcohol consumption
