Doctor's reminder: Do not put your hands in your pockets when walking after snow

2023-12-13

After the heavy snowfall, the number of fall patients receiving emergency treatment at Beijing Jishuitan Hospital has significantly increased, with the majority being patients with wrist fractures. Doctors remind citizens not to walk too fast when going out after snow, and not to put their hands in their pockets; Elderly people should try not to go out. The three most prone areas to fractures after falling are the wrist, hip, and ankle. The doctor explained that the first reaction of most people after falling is to hold their hands on the ground, causing the force of the fall to be transmitted through the wrist to the forearm, resulting in a distal radius fracture. Therefore, patients with wrist fractures account for over 60% of those with snow induced fractures. Doctors remind citizens to wear loose, warm, and non slip flat shoes as much as possible when going out after snow, pay attention to the material of the sole, and avoid wearing high heels. Try to avoid smooth road surfaces such as marble, tiles, and ice as much as possible. The walking speed should not be too fast, and the soles of the feet should be firmly stepped on. It is best to form an outward figure, take small steps forward, and do not put your hands in your pockets. (Beijing Daily reporter Sun Leqi)
