A "New Maritime Silk Road" Connecting Economic and Trade Exchanges between East and West

2023-09-25

On the banks of the Elbe River, Hamburg Port, Germany's largest port, is bustling as usual: cargo ships enter and exit the port area, and dock loading and unloading operations continue to operate. On the 24th local time, the third largest container port in Europe once again welcomed the "COSCO Maritime Virgo" - this 20000 TEU container with a length of about 400 meters and a width of nearly 60 meters, is currently one of the ultra large container ships active on world routes. Starting from Tianjin Port on August 12th, the "COSCO Marine Virgo" has been sailing for over a month, stopping at ports such as Dalian, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Singapore, Piraeus, Rotterdam, etc. After completing its operations at Hamburg Port, it will continue to Antwerp and eventually return to Shanghai. Captain Mo Weidong is from Shanghai. He is 54 years old and has been engaged in maritime transportation for over 30 years. He is an experienced 'veteran'. This is already his fifth year running this route. "Over the years, I have really seen the changes brought about by the the Belt and Road initiative." During the operation of berthing in Meishan Port Area of Ningbo Zhoushan Port, Mo Weidong introduced and took the reporter to the cab. Standing in the driver's cabin several tens of meters away from the deck, looking out of the window, the stacked containers are neatly arranged, and the bridge crane moves quickly and accurately grasps the containers. It skillfully cooperates with the trucks parked at the dock, and the entire operation process is smooth and efficient. Since the beginning of this year, there has been a large volume of container loading and unloading on our routes, "said Mo Weidong, In the past, there were many processed products and light industrial products in the export of goods. In recent years, the 'New Three Kinds' exports represented by electric passenger cars, lithium batteries, and solar cells have performed outstandingly. In addition to exports, we transport Airbus aircraft components from Hamburg to Tianjin every week for assembly, and China Europe has close economic and trade exchanges, which is a direct reflection of our routes, "said Mo Weidong. At present, Hamburg Port is connected to major Chinese ports through 15 routes, and about one-third of the containers it handles come from or will be shipped to China. The CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, Jens Mayer, told the media: "Hamburg Port can enhance business cooperation with Chinese ports to smooth the sea and land supply chain." In addition to Hamburg Port, the German port of Bremen Hafen has recently witnessed the inaugural voyage of the "China Europe" liner route of the Far Sea Auto Shipping Company. At the end of August this year, the "COSCO Shengshi" ship arrived at the BLG car terminal in Bremen Hafen, Germany, unloading 530 commercial cars from China. Bremen Hafen Port is the last stop of the European liner route of the "COSCO Prosperity". This voyage carried a total of 3731 Chinese made commercial vehicles at ports in Shanghai and Xiamen, including over 2700 new energy vehicles. The ship departed from Xiamen Port, passed through the Indian Ocean and the Suez Canal, docked in the UK and Belgium, and finally arrived at German ports. It took 43 days and the entire journey was about 9900 nautical miles. Although experiencing the impact of the epidemic in previous years, China Europe economic and trade exchanges and cooperation have shown resilience. The port of Piraeus in Greece is one of the important transit stations on the China Europe route. Mo Weidong provides a data that intuitively reflects the growth of trade volume: previously, it took about one and a half days to operate at the port of Piraeus, but now it takes about two days. two thousand and twenty-two
