Optimizing the Curriculum System Construction of Naval Engineering University: Releasing New Vitality through Discipline Integration

2023-06-12

In one corner of Wu Ling's desk, a faculty member at Naval Engineering University, is a pile of the second batch of implementation plans for the "X+Artificial Intelligence" pilot program at the university. Looking at the new batch of adjustment opinions, her thoughts returned to 2018- that year, the school included the "X+Artificial Intelligence" plan in the school's medium and long-term construction and development plan and conducted preliminary argumentation. After more than half a year of practical exploration, the pilot implementation plan of "Weapons Professional+Artificial Intelligence" has been formed and approved. In March 2019, the school selected relevant majors to carry out pilot projects, focusing on teaching staff, course content, platform construction, and other aspects to promote this plan. No matter how the disciplines and majors change, the trend of intelligent development will not change. "The person in charge of the plan's argumentation said that in recent years, universities have been closely following the development trend to continuously optimize their curriculum system, update teaching content, innovate educational models, gradually promote interdisciplinary integration, and focus on cultivating professional talents who adapt to the transformation of artificial intelligence paradigm. In the pilot program, the school designated a professional course supervisor and an artificial intelligence subject supervisor for each student, jointly customized personalized growth paths for the students, and scientifically arranged tutoring time and teaching content. Once, student Li Taiwei learned from an exchange with his comrades in the old unit that grassroots troops need multifunctional submarines to reconnaissance small targets and detect hydrology and meteorology. He envisioned: "If intelligent technology is introduced into these two tasks and underwater robots assist officers and soldiers in completing tasks, wouldn't it improve the efficiency of underwater operations. After consulting with the subject supervisor, Li Taiwei decided to integrate intelligent technology into the design and improve its functions under the guidance of a professional supervisor. Li Taiwei and his team members won first prize in the World University Underwater Robot Competition for this innovative design. In fact, the implementation of the "X+Artificial Intelligence" plan stems from previous exploration, and the school has made multiple attempts around curriculum reform. The first course to test the water was "Precision Guidance Principles" taught by Professor Gu Hongcan. Before the curriculum reform, Gu Hongcan specifically conducted research in grassroots troops and research institutes to find the best entry point for integrating combat training needs and artificial intelligence research results into the classroom. After careful consideration, Gu Hongcan decided to move the actual equipment into the classroom and guide the students to combine intelligent elements for "secondary development". Afterwards, in the new course practice, the students were given an additional microcomputer motherboard connected to the actual signal. In teaching, Gu Hongcan will preset goals and guide students to use intelligent guidance heads to write algorithms, attempting to enable the actual installation to independently track the targets. After a period of teaching practice, the students welcomed the final assessment. During this period, everyone wrote relevant code according to the "combat situation" given by the assessment team, "guided" the actual installation and correction direction, and quickly attacked according to the task needs. Nowadays, students have a deeper understanding of information fusion, intelligent warfare, and more, "Gu Hongcan said with relief. The adjusted course" Principles of Precise Guidance "has been recognized by various parties and has been selected as one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate courses. A good course drives multiple professional groups. With such a strong drive, the teaching and research personnel of the school have completed the construction of multiple basic courses in artificial intelligence,
