Appreciate the century long history of overseas Chinese and see today's Bay Area. Following the convening of the China Overseas Chinese Investment (Guangdong) Conference in Guangzhou in February this year, the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area has welcomed "relatives" from all over the world. From May 16th to 18th, approximately 700 guests from 90 countries and regions around the world gathered in Jiangmen, China's top hometown of overseas Chinese, to participate in the 2023 Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Conference. This is the second time that the first Overseas Chinese Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Conference was successfully held in 2019. After 4 years, what signal has been sent by the re hosting of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Conference for overseas Chinese? How can the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area use overseas Chinese as a bridge, seize development opportunities with overseas Chinese, and share the Chinese Dream together? The theme of the first Overseas Chinese Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Conference is "Gathering Overseas Chinese Power to Promote the Construction of the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area", while the theme of the 2023 Overseas Chinese Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area Conference is "Gathering Overseas Chinese Power to Realize the Dream of the Greater Bay Area". It is not difficult to find that keywords such as "convergence", "overseas Chinese", and "power" have not changed. Overseas Chinese, why is it the key? From a historical perspective, overseas Chinese have always breathed and shared a common destiny with their motherland. They are an important link between China and the world, and also an important driving force for promoting national development. From the perspective of economic construction alone, according to data, with the reopening of China's modernization door through reform and opening up, overseas Chinese capital has been pouring in. According to statistics, between 1979 and 1991, China approved agreements for the utilization of foreign capital worth over 121.4 billion US dollars. During this period, Hong Kong enterprises accounted for the vast majority of overseas Chinese enterprises entering the mainland. From 1992 to 1999, foreign direct investment exceeded 196.8 billion US dollars, of which overseas Chinese accounted for 127.6 billion US dollars, approximately 65% of the foreign investment entering China. Compared to other regions in China, overseas Chinese have a deeper significance for Guangdong. Among the 60 million overseas Chinese in the country, 30 million come from Guangdong, distributed in over 160 countries and regions around the world. In the early stages of the reform and opening up, overseas Chinese and compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao harbored the ideal of building their motherland and actively participated in Guangdong's reform, opening up, and modernization construction. This brought Guangdong a large amount of funds, advanced technology, high-end talents, modern concepts, and extensive relationships, greatly promoting Guangdong's opening-up and economic and social development. They led the trend of Guangdong's reform and opening up with practical actions. In addition to economic development, the "going global" of Chinese culture also relies on the efforts of overseas Chinese. From the 24 season drum, which integrates the national intangible cultural heritage of Guangdong Lion Drum and traditional calligraphy art characteristics of China, to the traditional Chinese Spring Festival becoming a national holiday in Panama, and to the last Saturday in April each year being designated as "World Tai Chi Day", overseas Chinese have played a positive role in the process of Chinese culture entering the world stage. Overseas Chinese are like an invisible bridge, connecting one end to the motherland and the other end to the overseas. It not only opens the way for domestic people to understand overseas, but also opens a window for overseas people to understand China.
