Food and Agriculture Organization: Global food prices have been declining for 12 consecutive months

2023-04-10

According to data released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the 7th, as of March this year, the global food price index has been declining for 12 consecutive months, a 20.5% decrease from its historical high a year ago. Nevertheless, global food prices are still at a high level, and some developing countries are facing food security challenges. Data shows that the global food price index in March 2023 was 126.9 points, the lowest since July 2021. In March 2022, this index surged to 159.3 points, the highest value since the index was compiled in 1990. The FAO Food Price Index measures the international price changes of a package of food commodities, consisting of the weighted average of five commodity price indices: grains, vegetable oils, dairy products, meat, and sugar. Recently, global prices of grains, vegetable oils, and dairy products have shown a downward trend, while meat and sugar have slightly increased. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, the global food price index has experienced a "twelve consecutive drops", mainly due to sufficient supply, sluggish import demand, and the extension of the Black Sea port agricultural export agreement. Maximo Torrero, chief economist of FAO, said that although food prices have fallen globally, they are still at a high level, and the domestic market prices in some countries continue to rise, bringing more challenges to food security. In some developing countries that are net importers of food, if their currencies depreciate or their debt burden increases, the situation will become even more severe. (New News Agency)
