What is the policy trend of Israel's "rightmost government"

2022-12-27

Netanyahu, the leader of the Likud Group of Israel, announced the successful formation of a new government on the evening of December 21. The longest ruling prime minister in Israel's history returned to the center of power. Analysts pointed out that the new government is mainly composed of right-wing and extreme right-wing parties, which is called by many Israeli media and scholars as the "most right-wing government in history" of the country, and its policy changes deserve attention. The new Israeli government will be composed of six political parties, including the Likud Group, the religious Shas Party and the far right religious Zionist Party. Netanyahu will become Prime Minister. He previously served as Prime Minister for 15 years, making him the longest Prime Minister in Israel. Israel held its fifth parliamentary election since April 2019 on November 1 this year. The right-wing camp led by Netanyahu won 64 of the 120 seats. According to Israeli law, only political parties that have obtained at least 3.25 per cent of the votes in the elections can enter Parliament. Before the election, Netanyahu, in order to prevent the small parties in his camp from failing to reach this threshold, brokered the temporary merger of three extreme right-wing parties with obvious differences, and unified their participation in the election in the name of the religious Zionist Party. Finally, the party won 14 seats and became the third largest party in the parliament. On November 13, President Herzog authorized Netanyahu to form a new government. The deadline for Netanyahu to form a cabinet is midnight on December 21. Netanyahu had to spend a lot of time coordinating because of the fierce competition among his allies for some important ministerial posts. At the same time, the right-wing camp also needs to pass several amendments to the Basic Law in Parliament in order to allow several members of parliament facing judicial disputes to enter the cabinet smoothly. Therefore, Netanyahu finally completed the formation of his cabinet less than half an hour before the deadline. Given that the Netanyahu camp has a majority of seats in the parliament, the approval of the new government formation plan is basically "no suspense". Analysts of internal affairs and diplomacy pointed out that the new government will face arduous tasks after taking office, and needs to solve the problems of high living costs, high unemployment rate, housing shortage, insufficient infrastructure and so on. Emmanuel Navon, an Israeli political analyst, told the Xinhua News Agency that the members of the new government mainly come from the right-wing and extreme right-wing camps, and their positions are relatively close. Therefore, it is expected that the stability of the new government will be improved. Israel is likely to get out of the political deadlock and break the cycle of frequent elections in recent years. However, Gerald Steinberg, a professor in the Department of Political Science of Baylan University, pointed out that there are still many differences among the parties in the ruling coalition representing the interests of different groups. Whether they can work together to cope with various challenges remains to be seen. The formation of the "rightmost government" has raised concerns both inside and outside Israel. Gayle Talehill, a researcher in the Department of Political Science of Hebrew University, said that the admission of the far right party to the cabinet is likely to have an impact on Israel's foreign policy, especially on US relations. Analysts believe that the general framework of Israel US relations will not change after the new government takes office, and the United States will still regard Israel as a firm ally in the Middle East. However, traditionally, the government dominated by the Democratic Party of the United States and the right-wing Israeli government have great differences on the Palestinian Israeli issue. A senior Israeli diplomat, Aaron Pincus, recently wrote that although
