Nature Education: feel like taking your children out to play?

2022-02-17

Under the "double reduction" policy, children have more time to go outdoors, and nature education ushers in an opportunity for development. However, there are still some shortcomings in the development of nature education in China, and the deviation needs to be corrected. What should the real nature education be? Close contact with nature "How many kilograms of bamboo does a giant panda eat a day?" "How to distinguish the false thumb of a giant panda?" In the publicity and education center of Hongkou station of Dujiangyan management and Protection Station of giant panda National Park, the stationmaster Liu Bo, as a natural education tutor, threw questions to the children who came to visit. In addition to indoor science popularization, he also led primary and secondary school students of all ages into the forest to get a close understanding of the animals and plants around him, pick plants and make specimens. "Relying on the waziping publicity and education center of Longxi Hongkou National Nature Reserve, we have designed 11 natural education lines, which basically cover the functions of animal and plant science popularization, wild bird watching, natural experience and so on." Liu Bo said. Students are watching birds in the camp, photographed by Jiang Hongjing Sichuan Province proposes that by 2025, the participation of natural education in kindergartens and primary and secondary schools in Sichuan should reach 90%. The first "science popularization week of Sichuan Province" was successfully held in March 2021. At a nature education camp located in longcanggou National Forest Park, Yingjing County, Sichuan Province, Liu Wenwen, the camp instructor, introduced that the nature education camp is set up in the general control area of the giant panda National Park. In terms of design, we try our best to preserve the original landform and natural vegetation, and let the students really explore the forest through a variety of "giant panda protection" theme activities. Tan Tian, the manager of Chengdu camping brand Maru camping, said that during the summer vacation of 2021, they successively organized nearly 10 camp summer camps, "each one is full". The weather turns cool in autumn and winter, and weekend activities are still lively. Some parents spontaneously bring their children to experience the wild lifestyle, while others organize students to participate in nature education activities. Nature education is not tourism, Curriculum must be scientific In a broad sense, nature education includes forest education, outdoor expansion, camp education, research travel, experience farm, etc. In China, nature education is still in the exploratory stage, the operating institutions are relatively diverse, and the price is not close to the people. For example, for the "harvesting rice" course, which is hot in the autumn harvest season, the price of individual natural education bases in the suburbs of Chengdu is up to 800 yuan per day. With the arrival of the "winter camp" and the most high-end education base, the camp has been charged 50000 yuan for a three-day winter vacation. This limits the number of student families willing to participate in nature education. The course price is not cheap, but the course quality is not necessarily high. Some parents said that many institutions claiming to do nature education have a variety of publicity slogans, but the content of the course is just farm picking and natural sightseeing, which is more like tourism rather than learning. "It doesn't feel much different from taking their children out to play.". Senior nature education practitioners interviewed believe that the current nature education courses provided by social institutions are mixed, the market is not standardized, and the forms of education are often fragmented and lack of systematicness and continuity. There are also many deficiencies in concept construction, talent training, curriculum design and so on. Although some nature education practitioners have enthusiasm for nature, their quality and experience are uneven, and some lack the knowledge and skills required for practice. Influenced by the novel coronavirus pneumonia, many natural education activities and courses have been canceled, and the industry's profitability has been even lower, resulting in instability of the employees. This puts forward a test for the nature education industry to cultivate internal skills. Some non-standard natural education courses also convey incorrect values. It is understood that in the process of "experiencing" and "Studying" animals and plants, some nature education courses indulge students to treat them roughly, such as picking flowers and twigs at will, bringing their own grains to lure birds out of the forest and attract natural enemies, which interfere with the living environment of wild animals and plants. In addition, Tan Tian believes that in the curriculum design, nature education and outdoor survival curriculum are a whole. Real nature is full of dangers. If children only engage in formal nature education and lack outdoor survival skills, they will be very vulnerable to nature. Nature education is not a simple camp activity. Embracing nature is reflected in all aspects of life. In recent years, many protected areas have devoted their energy to the construction of large-scale natural education facilities such as tree houses, forest cableways and plank roads, and also compiled some complex but not practical teaching materials and teaching aids. In this regard, industry insiders believe that nature education should not only move the classroom into the forest, but also enable participants to actively recognize and experience the existing environment.
